having issues installing new patches http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2672/having-issues-installing-new-patches Sat, 24 Mar 2012 01:07:12 +0000 neko30 2672@/talks/discussions hi all,

i'm a new GH2 user...i initially installed a couple patches (sedna) with no problems. but lately, i've been trying to install new patches (v4d, v4b)...but everytime i load new patch into camera, the camera says i have 3 hours and 3 mins recording time--on a 32 gb card.

something is wrong, right?

does anybody have any idea of what may be going on? i'm installing same way originally...but now seem to be having problems.

thanks for any advice. goro

A sticky topic with a table, all usable patches and they basic characteristics. A simple settings wiki.

i.e:

Name of the patch - bitrate - GOP - minimum card speed to use - minimum card speed to spann - image characteristics (detail, motion, high ISO, timelapse....) - reliability modes - patch download.

This can help the community organization, help new users and avoid the useless topics like: "what is the best patch to shoot my beauty neighbor?" What is the best to shoot my dog?"...

Recommend GH2 patch for shooting a theatrical production http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2670/recommend-gh2-patch-for-shooting-a-theatrical-production Fri, 23 Mar 2012 16:35:47 +0000 Brian_Siano 2670@/talks/discussions In a few weeks, I'm going to be shooting a local theater's production. I've done this before with my Panasonic TM700, and I've had great results, but I'm considering using my GH2 for this one. But it will require using a patch-- and since much of the patch discussion is a bit on the technical side for me, I'd like to ask for a recommendation.

I'll be shooting 24fps, and I don't anticipate requiring any of the higher ISO speeds since the stage will be well-lit. I'd like to install a patch that enables good quality audio, a bit rate of at least 28 mbps but no more than 44 mbps, and reliable continuous shooting for perhaps an hour to 90 minutes. Is there a patch that offers this already? Or, if I have to adjust the settings manually in pTools, which settings should I use?

Thanks for any advice.

What hacked bitrate does "High Bit Rate" (HBR) adopt? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2648/what-hacked-bitrate-does-high-bit-rate-hbr-adopt Wed, 21 Mar 2012 19:25:03 +0000 dualreality 2648@/talks/discussions This is my first post so I'd like to first thank the Personal View team for such a tremendous resource. I bought a GH2 in January and have been blown away by its capabilities.

I have been playing with various hacks and have a question regarding the High Bit Rate mode (HBR). If I apply a firmware hack, what bit rate does the HBR adhere to? For example, in the Driftwood AQuamotion v2 .ini file, there is the following information:

Video Bitrate 24H=100000000 Video Bitrate 24L=88000000 Video Bitrate FSH/SH=68000000 Video Bitrate FH/H=56000000

But "HBR" isn't in there. Does HBR adopt one of the above bit rates instead? If so, which one exactly?

I'm using a European model GH2 (PAL), I don't know if that should make any difference to my question.

Many thanks.

Driftwood Sedna 'Settings' for ptools 3.64d- Release 15th March 2012 ETA 01:00am

(Panasonic firmware v1.11 & ptools 3.64d '200212' required). Settings for GH2 & GF2 Lumix cameras. Stats: 24p Intra, 1080i/HBR Intra, 720 GOP3/GOP6 all settings as Orion with Sedna Matrices:-

A = High Detail matrix Good for Wide full detail shots.

B = Good allround detail matrix Great all round wide / mid shots.

C = Softer detail matrix Softer skin tonal detail.

*You can rename the set.ini files to suit your A to J button placements - just change the letter using right-click rename in Windows/Mac PC)

There's not too massive a difference between them - just fine adjustments. Look great on STD Picture Profile.

Two packs;- one pack set on AQ1, the other Q20.

NOTE: These are balanced high Quantised matrix settings disabling the need for pushing AQ to 2, 3 or 4 or lower manual Q

TECH INFO: Who needs 150M to pull off good looking pictures? You don't. Good to Hi quality Type 10 sdcards only.

NOTES: It seems a lifetime in a week trying to achieve the best possible bitrate, Q, matrix etc... settings to date. Sedna is the work of around 50+ odd hours of continuous testing with 4 GH2s working around the clock with different lenses, ISO's, shutter speeds and stopping up and down... but even that's not enough testing.

Some of these settings have also been put through their paces by @onionbrain (incredible and extensive chart work, thank you Andrew) and @thepalalias and I am deeply grateful for their reports. Per @thepalalias has also been of great help in assisting in visual testing and also for his tireless work testing audio. Therefore, I have included his latest 'Pasadena Pulse Audio V2 Beta 2' audio settings within Sedna - which I know he (and his team) have spent an age developing and getting right. I can vouch that they sound superb - bringing the best audio and recording mic setups available to date to the GH2. Well done fellas. They are to be applauded.

But a week's testing by so few of us is never enough to cover every single conceivable problem. And for that we rely on you filmmakers, documentary makers, videographers, and all to report back your findings.

Personally, I have been rather selfish - trying to achieve the best settings for my up-and-coming film project with the gh2 - fundraiser will be up soon ;-) Predominant testing has therefore taken place at 24p level. Although extensive work has also gone to achieving closeish HBR & 720p settings for users of those settings. I believe more time on these will be spent in the future.

The main objective of Sedna has been to look at ways of calming down the noise, knock down the overblown Reds whilst wrestling with the blues and without the colour space values of 4:2:2, 10bit et al, its near on impossible - we can only mess with the luminance and chrominance. Most of the testing has taken place in real world conditions - the others from my chart basics and the chart profile tests by Andrew @onionbrain. I think all of us testing so far have seen better performance than the stock matrix by Panasonic. Whether you prefer them to Orion or Dark Matter settings is up to you. After all, the human visual system means what's good for one is not the best for another. But now there's more choice.

But enough banter, soon it will be your chance to try out the new settings.

Driftwood 'Cluster' v1 With Orion (AVC Intra adapted) Matrix VBR 'Settings' for ptools 3.64d- Released 9th March 2012 1am

(Panasonic firmware v1.11 & ptools 3.64d '200212' required). Settings for GH2 & GF2 Lumix cameras. Stats: Upto 72M 24p, Upto 36M HBR, Upto 36M 720p modes. (*All REC MODES include B frames)

INFO: Very simple Long GOP cluster of i/p/b frames principle, Low Bitrate, conservative settings for all round use with a nice matrix for Type 6 card users. After so many requests from non GOP1'ers to provide the Orion Matrix in a Long GOP configuration I settled on this one to hopefully satisfy the need. I like 12 GOP / 15 GOP for Long GOP - as far as editing goes and converters out there, the Ibbpbbpbbpbb (12 GOP PAL) and ibbpbbpbbpbbpbb (15 GOP NTSC) is the most universally supported GOP structure outside of Intra. A nice cluster of i/p and b frames and appropriately titled methinks. Hopefully, this will keep long duration seekers, type 6 card users, and HBR peeps happy (though I doubt I can please all of 'em).

INFO: Orion 4c with Dark Matter matrix pack. Three adjusted matrices to try out, all scaled from perceived HVS Great Quality (v1) to middle of these (v2) and perceived HVS Highest quality (v3). HVS = Human Visual System. This is sharper than the Orion matrix of yore which is still great but many of you wanted to pull out a few extra stops. Let's see if this helps YOU. Only other changes from Orion 4b are GOP Releated, 720p is 9/6 for NTSC/PAL.

Please let me know which matrix you like.

Q. Where do I get firmware v1.11 and ptools 3.64d?

A. All the neccessary links are available here at top of page 1: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2317/ptool-v3.64d-topic/p1

Q. How do I load Quantum settings & firmware v1.11 into ptools 3.64d?

A. See below - its simple.

1. simply make a new folder on a pc call it 'Quantum'.

2. Depending on which camera you own do the following;-

GH2 Users: Copy Panasonics official GH2 firmware v1.11 (GH2__V11.bin) into that folder. (You can download this firmware from Panasonics offical site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/dl/gh2.html)

GF2 Users: Copy Panasonics official GF2 firmware v1.11 (GF2__V11.bin) into that folder. (You can download this firmware from Panasonics offical site at http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/dl/gf2.html)

3. Download latest ptools v3.64d 200212 from the 'ptools 3.64d' thread link (https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software) and copy that into the folder too.

4. Download the Quantum patches (white looking documents found at the bottom of this section) and unzip them to the Quantum folder.

5. NOW run ptools, then load the firmware v1.11 (GH2__V11.bin for GH2 users or GF2__V11.bin for GF2 users) when it asks, now you'll see Rocket and Orion settings highlighted in Green (hover mouse over B and G buttons) click on either, whichever you wanna try.

6. One youve selected your fav' Quantum patch then click on SAVE FIRMWARE button and save the patched firmware to your sdcard naming it higher than the original GH2__V11.bin (GF2__V11.bin for GF2) firmware (makes sense yeah!) for example 'GH2__V12.bin' (GF2__V12.bin for GF2) when asked.

7. Load the new firmware from the sdcard to your camera by inserting sdcard, switch on camera, press the green-marked triangular 'Play' button once, Answer yes, to update your firmware. Note: Make sure youve got a fully charged battery before doing this update.

8. Done! Film away! *Please note you WILL NOT see any cosmetic changes in the menu system of the camera - but rest assured, the Quantum settings are all loaded & working hidden, under the bonnet of the camera ;-)

HOW TO PUT IT BACK TO STOCK SETTINGS AGAIN? You can always go back to stock settings by simply UNCHECKING all the boxes in ptools (or by clicking any unused red button, A to J)and saving the edited firmware back to your sdcard and reupdating. Easy.

All basic and beginners questions about the hack can be found here http://www.personal-view.com/faqs/

Exactly what is the deal with version numbers when hacking the GH2? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2614/exactly-what-is-the-deal-with-version-numbers-when-hacking-the-gh2 Mon, 19 Mar 2012 05:33:53 +0000 Speldosa 2614@/talks/discussions I'm going to hack my Panasonic GH2 and been reading up on the process for quite some while now so I won't screw up my camera. Two tutorials that I've been looking at are this (http://www.google.no/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CDEQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fosgfilms.com%2Fhack-the-panasonic-gh2%2F&ei=ZgJnT__jOKSl4gTbv5HlBw&usg=AFQjCNGbxsoY8P0JQ0sGl-HX8zlI7NPjjw&sig2=zFS_B1prU7cc2B6Hia756A) and this (http://www.sam-mallery.com/2011/11/an-ez-guide-to-hacking-the-panasonic-gh2/).

Now, everything seems pretty straight forward except when I read about naming and version incraments. That is, there seems to be two things mentioned when talking about version number and version incrament: 1) A setting you make inside PTools where you specify the version incrament. 2) The actual name that you decide for your bin-file that you suqsequently place on your SD card.

For example, the first tutorial above mentions the following:

Step 5: Select Save Firmware and save it as GH2__V1x , the x can be any number from 0 – 9 just don’t over write the original firmware!

When they say "over write the original firmware", what exactly do they mean? The firmware I already have on my camera? In that case, does it matter if it's already hacked or not? Or are they talking about my firmware file that I've downloaded? In that case, why can't I overwrite it? Shouldn't I just be able to download it again if I want to?

The other tutorial mentions the following:

8) If the “Version increment” box in ptool isn’t checked, click on it and check it.

This isn't mentioned in the first guide. Why not? What will happen if I don't?

All this really confuses me. Could somebody give me a clear explanation why this (apparently) is such a big deal? If nobody would havve mentioned anything about all this, I would have imagined that the only thing you needed to do was to load a bin-file onto you camera which will overwrite all old settings and software each time you do it, and that's it. However, it doesn't really seems like that's the case.

GH1 and GF1 hack problems http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2606/gh1-and-gf1-hack-problems Sat, 17 Mar 2012 16:37:47 +0000 docz 2606@/talks/discussions Hello, I've tried to install the hacked firmware for my GH1 and GF1 cameras. I'm finding it hard to get the kind of bitrates and high quality footage that others are getting.

I tried different patches, mainly Lpowell's patches for both the GF1 and GH1.

AVCHD usually stays at around 16mbit/s with terrible mud / compression artifacts. None of the patches I have tried seem to render AVCHD video @ the high quality with bitrates around 50+mbit/s

MJPEG I have gotten up to about 54mbit/s which is great, but still it's not as clean as I would want. I get a lot of JPEG "boxing" (you know where pixels are converted into giant pixels) and there seems to be some kind of "Unsharp Mask" filter applied to the footage, even though I've set the Film mode to be -2 in sharpness.

4:2:2 color doesn't seem to work, footage is reported to have 4:2:2 color sampling, but the actual footage doesn't look like 4:2:2 footage, and color keying is a nightmare!

So how can I get the AVCHD footage up to the quality where it is clean and free of mud / artifacts? And how can I remove the "sharpening filter" ? And if possible, how can I get true 4:2:2 sampling?

Any input/help would be greatly appreciated

Legal Question: BIN Files vs. .INI Files http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2592/legal-question-bin-files-vs.-.ini-files Thu, 15 Mar 2012 21:16:39 +0000 thepalalias 2592@/talks/discussions In the same day I recently had several people ask me whether I could provide pre-compiled .BIN files for them (clients, friends, etc.) and I realized that I hadn't seen them posted online before - only the .INI files.

My question is, is there a legal reason for this? Is it acceptable for me to host a .INI file of the audio settings I've helped cultivate since October but not to post a .BIN file with them applied? Or is it simply that everyone here would rather get hands on with the files themselves (which I can easily understand :)?

I don't want to inadvertently create problems or friction and don't have the expertise to decipher the situation without input.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter!

But it just works in automatic. When user enables it, the camera itself decides when activate it or not. When camera activate the icon turns yellow in LCD. Many times I enable it and keep waiting the camera to activate it and nothing happens...

It would be great the hack enable an option to get this function always enabled or always disabled bypassing the camera decision.

I currently have a GH2 PAL version with the updated Panasonic firmware. I am looking at an additional GH2, and was considering to purchase a NTSC model. One question I have been trying to find out, and can never seem to get a firm answer about the hack. I hope someone can really clear the air for me, or guide me to the info.

Will I be able to use a NSTC GH2, hack and set it to unit PAL to perform the 50i/25p/24p...? I would like to have both the original PAL and new NSTC cameras set identically (which needs to be PAL)... so would this be possible? or is it recommended get a PAL model instead...?

Thanks, for your help in advance.

24L - 1920x1080 24p (native 24, not 23.976)

Of course it would be nice if the camera playback could read all of them. Sometimes it is good to check the footage immediately in the camera. Maybe some of Quantum XY could be modified...

Thank you very much for me and all others GH2 users from Europe also waiting for such great update!!!

Newbie Hacker: GH2... Need to know more about the whole tweaking/hacking thing http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2538/newbie-hacker-gh2...-need-to-know-more-about-the-whole-tweakinghacking-thing Fri, 09 Mar 2012 01:00:23 +0000 MarkEMark 2538@/talks/discussions I am a videographer that bought one of the first USA shipping GH2's. I am using it for corporate video work. Very little stills if any (kids birthday and stuff... otherwise, all video work).

My business partner uses a Canon 5D mk II, and I told him the pany was suppose to shoot as good as the MK II.

So I am researching how to improve the GH2 video, and downloaded the Panasonic GH2 Guide for Filmakers by OSGFilms. So far it has helped a lot to understand the GH2 for video. I have downloaded, and I think I successfully installed the GH2__V10 hack he links to. I re-named the file I uploaded to the GH2: GH2__V11, but the version in the system on the camera still shows Version 1. Not sure that matters, as it showed the system updating after I inserted the card as instructed.

In the book he refers to several hacks, and I am curious as to how this all works. Can you apply more than one hack at a time?

Is there a listing here of other hacks and the functionality of each as it adds to the GH2?

Finally, is there a newbie guide that discusses hacking the camera and could help a newbie like me (at this kinda thing) understand what is happening with all of the tech stuff? Maybe a thread that takes you step by step through what hacking is actually doing to the camera (I know it is basically a revised operating system of sorts allowing the hardware to do more , etc,,, ) But it appears most of the folks here already understands the basics, and I am trying to get a handle on the whole thing with no local folks I know to find out more :o)

Wierd image glitch, first so far http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2542/wierd-image-glitch-first-so-far Fri, 09 Mar 2012 14:41:17 +0000 spacewig 2542@/talks/discussions I don't know if anyone else has had this issue. I am currently editing a short that we filmed using Driftwood's Quantum V9b and of the hundreds of GB's of files that we recorded, this is the first time I see this. Basically I noticed a "flicker" during editing and when I looked closer (i.e. frame by frame) I noticed that the bottom 9/10ths of one frame (still03) was showing the info from a prior one. You can see that the hair in the top 1/10th of the frame is following the right sequence. I am using the 64/95 sandisk.

Anyone else have this issue? Perhaps someone knowledgeable could enlighten me as to how this might happen and if it is something that is avoidable or simply one of those things that can and will occasionally happen. I seriously hope this won't be a recurrent issue as I still have a lot of material left to edit.

Questions about new pTool and hacks on GH1 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2537/questions-about-new-ptool-and-hacks-on-gh1 Thu, 08 Mar 2012 21:21:17 +0000 radicalkat 2537@/talks/discussions Hey folks,

I've been away from my GH17 for a several months (having a baby cuts down on play time!). Since I' last used my GH1, the GH2 has been hacked! So now I have some questions, if it's not too much trouble.

  1. Are there 2 versons of ptool? One for GH1 and another for GH2?
  2. If not, can all hacks be run on both cameras?
  3. If not, is there a web page where there is a list of all the various hacks for the GH1 in one place?
  4. Finally, when I got my camera, I bought it with a Sandisk Extreme class 10 16 GB (30MB/s) card. I'd like to get another card. Is the newer 45 MB/s card adequate for the hacks now available for the GH1?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

cannot load any GH2 patches from new Sandisk 64GB/95mb/s http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2422/cannot-load-any-gh2-patches-from-new-sandisk-64gb95mbs Mon, 27 Feb 2012 15:12:56 +0000 THX1965 2422@/talks/discussions I have the popular Sandisk Extreme HD 32GB 30mb/s which allows me to load any GH2 patch just fine. However, when I tried the same with my brand new fast Sandisk 64GB card (after formatting it in my GH2), no patch is recognized from that card when I hit the green button and try to load it. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I noticed the 64GB card shows up as "Untitled" on my Mac (after formatting it in my camera), while the 32GB one is called "NO NAME". When I change "Untitled) to NO NAME on my compter, it still doesn't work. (I am running the latest version of Lion). The card (64GB) does however work fine recording with any patch and I do have the other one for laoding patches.

But I still want to find out what the problem could be. Thanks in advance for any hint.

pTools and GF2... http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2493/ptools-and-gf2... Mon, 05 Mar 2012 17:00:40 +0000 JayB38 2493@/talks/discussions I just received my Panasonic GF2 to try out the patch, I followed instructions. Selected firmware (v1.12), selected features and saved firmware to new patch (v1.2), saved it into my SDHC card, put it in camera, pressed on and hit green play button and then...

It keeps giving me firmware 1.1. It seems I can't cross over to the new patch.

Using PNY 8GB Class 10 SDHC card.

Anyone getting this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
