If you don't have too do so please direct me on how to. Also, whenever I go to view my footage/pictures in camera it always prompts me to install the 1.1 patch, but I always decline thinking it will write over my patch. I am using The flow motion patch with no problems so far and am wondering if this is normal. Thanks!

Next Step for GH2 Hacking, Extending ETC mode? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3791/next-step-for-gh2-hacking-extending-etc-mode Thu, 05 Jul 2012 20:36:07 +0000 blazer003 3791@/talks/discussions First of all, this is not an idea that I came up with. I'm sharing what Walt shared. As I read his post, it made a lot of sense to me. So I'm curious if the team (aka Vitaliy) have thought about ETC mode as a possibility to get more resolution from the GH2. I'm sure that there are all kinds of insane coding that has to be uncovered, but as ETC mode takes the RAW 1920x1080 out of the middle of the sensor and dishes that to the encoder, logically it seems that it might not be AS difficult to extend the amount of the sensor that ETC mode reads and translate that into raw resolution.

Now chances are this has been thought about and again, I know very well it's not just changing a couple of 1920s to 2520s, but just throwing the idea out on the off chance that Vitaliy hadn't yet thought of it yet. I did do a search of this forum though it's hard to search for something quite that specific, and I didn't find anything. Anyway, here's the post where I got the idea (props to Walt).

Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to use the crop mode (extra tele conversion) of the gh2 to film in 21:9 in 1080p... I'm not very into this but as I understand in the crop mode the gh2 just uses the centre field (1920px1080p) of its chip. So actually there should be the capacity to extend the centre field to 2520px1080p (21:9), no? Would it be possible (i.e. in part of a hack) to create this feature (theoretically)? Or am I missing a point anywhere?

I haven't found anything about this on the internet and maybe this is because this idea is kind of a stupid thought, but then I would also be very thankfull if someone made be stop dreaming.

Thanks, walt

PTool Firmware compatability with Olympus macro lens? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3755/ptool-firmware-compatability-with-olympus-macro-lens Mon, 02 Jul 2012 09:38:30 +0000 capebio 3755@/talks/discussions I'm currently using my GH2 with an Olympus 35mm macro lens connected with the DMW-MA1 adapter. However, compatability only came with Firmware 1.2 update. (Otherwise can't use lens at all!) I'm concerned that in installing PTool (which I would really like to do), I will lose my lens compatability - and can I backtrack to V1.2 if so? p.s. Olympus lens focus is accurate, but atrociously slow and illogical. Lens messes around for a few seconds before finding focus. I have to press trigger button three times to get it to macro range as it jumps about a third closer with each press, and then goes hunting for focus in the long end. *Sigh (Hopefully this is in the right topic category this time)

GH2 Hacks Almost Working; Help Needed http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3734/gh2-hacks-almost-working-help-needed Sat, 30 Jun 2012 04:00:13 +0000 eddietemple 3734@/talks/discussions Hello All,

New to the GH2 hacking world. I am a filmmaker. I shoot narrative fiction. The best hack/patch that I can find that looks like what I want is Kae's 65mbs GOP3 hack, but I understand that it only works for the older version of Ptool. I'm not looking for extreme hacks due to limited memory space and I like a softer look.

Here's my problem: I hacked the camera with the settings following the instructions from various sources exactly as described and everything looked to be fine (unlocked higher ISOs, the remaining recording time on screen was cut to 1/3 that of the native 24mbs). But when I actually recorded footage it looked no better than the unhacked test stuff I had already shot. And when I put it into Stream Parser it was confirmed. I am only getting 24-25mbs and the footage looks bad. When I found out that Kae's settings only worked with the older version of Ptool (3.61) I tried a different 66mbs hack and simply lowered the GOP to 3 in Ptool. Same thing happened. I've tried this several times and get the same thing every time. I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gb 95mb/s card, so I'm fairly certain it's not the card's fault. I'm using Ptool v3.65d.

Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. NOTE: I apologize if this question has been answered before. This is my first time posting on this site.

Attached are two screencaps of my Stream Parser results. No. 1 is with Kae's settings and No. 2 is the 66mbs that I got from the patch vault topic.

I'd love to see a flat setting like that. Had a rough shoot this past weekend near sunset, just a lot of shadows mixed with a lot of highlights, and im sure a lot of others have had similar issues. I used to own an AF100 and the only two things I miss are the 1080p variable frame-rates and the flat cinema-D look.

If anyone has any new info on this feel free to comment. I'd love to see this get done as the next frontier of the hack. I just don't know if its possible or if anyone is even working on it...

GH2 Patches - Failures report - Common table. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3652/gh2-patches-failures-report-common-table. Thu, 21 Jun 2012 08:17:35 +0000 GuilleKloetzer 3652@/talks/discussions I´ve been thinking that it would be good to have a table in a dropbox or google doc where anybody can report bugs on any patch. This could be a standard and synthetic source of information or follow up of the patches performance. For the moment I think the only way to recollect info about this is to search in dozens of threads, and this is growing everyday. Is anybody doing a register already? I think the table should include the following columns: patch, brief description of bug or glitch, GH2 settings, SD card type, lens, link to download file if necessary. Any more suggestions?

thanks to anybody out there on this growing community

So in this thread, I would like to have users post their video and give a detailed description of information containing no less than: 1. Setting 2. Lenses 3.Picture Profile. I don't think there are any threads like this so I hope it creates some stir because I know that I specifically hate digging around for Video footage. After I've applied a hack, how do I know that it worked? I took some footage after having hacked the camera and i couldn't tell the difference between the footage from before and after. Do I just not have an "eye" for the difference? Or did I do it wrong?

So basically, is there a way to check that the hack worked and the video is "hacked" and has a higher/better bitrate/quality?

Thanks!

first time hacking GH2 ntsc to use PAL - problems http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3613/first-time-hacking-gh2-ntsc-to-use-pal-problems Mon, 18 Jun 2012 03:22:06 +0000 tzver 3613@/talks/discussions hi there, first, thank you all, its great to be a part of a growing community. i got my NTSC GH2 and i need to use it in PAL mode. it came with firmware 1.1, i use SanDisk extreme UHS-1 45MB/s x300 cards (32 & 16 GB). i tried to hack it using EOSHD patch 44 Vanilla, and it seemed to work well, i was recording almost 40 minutes but then i went outside (while continuing the shot) and after few seconds i got this message "MOTION RECORDING TERMINATED DUE TO CARD WRITE SPEED LIMITATION" (somthing like that) and the camera freezed. only removing the battery restarted it. i wonder is there a known issue with this card type, or that the patch i used isn't reliable to use on originaly NTSC body in PAL mode? i have to run more tests, i loaded the body now with the original 1.1 firmware and changed only the 30 minutes limitation, the ISO expending option and the PAL/NTSC switching option. any suggestions for a reliable patch that'll work for me with these cards & body?

thanks.

p.s. - hope its not a too stupid question - what does SPANING means? why is it important?

thanks again :)

Best Hack Settings for Low-Light Interior Event? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3534/best-hack-settings-for-low-light-interior-event Sun, 10 Jun 2012 18:00:12 +0000 spikedurden 3534@/talks/discussions I'm shooting a concert at a cafe next weekend for a band. I've been testing lots of hacks. Here's how I'll be shooting and what I'm looking for:

-With Zeiss Primes wide open between F1.4 to F2.8 -ISO up to 640, preferably not beyond that. -My longest take may be up to ten minutes. The show shouldn't last more than 30. -I have one of the new 16GB Sandisk Extreme Pro 45mb/s cards. I will probably purchase a 32GB 45mb/s this week before the show. -I will probably take several 720p/60 shots for later conversion to slow-mo. -I'd like to reduce noise as much as possible. -I'm shooting the entire concert static with a Sony EX-1 and using the GH2 for close-ups and handheld coverage, so I suppose long takes aren't necessary. I can stop recording and start again and cut to my EX-1 coverage. So I have a back up.

Let me know if you need more info, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to use Sedna A but the only issue is spanning, which again is not absolutely necessary but would be nice. I'm testing Sedna spanning right now with my 16GB 45mb/s card to see how it does.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: My 16GB 45mb/s card does not span the Sedna A 24H setting but it does span the Sedna 24L setting.

Also, the much debated question: should I shoot smooth or nostalgia? There will be a lot of shadows and I don't want the shadows full of noise.

GH2 Hack - Settings - Noise http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3480/gh2-hack-settings-noise Tue, 05 Jun 2012 19:47:36 +0000 questech 3480@/talks/discussions After reading for a couple of days, this newbie is starting to get the picture, but I need your guidance.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears to me that the following may be true:

  • Ptool is an application that allows access to GH2 settings that are normally hidden from the everyday user. It changes the firmware as far as those setting are concerned, but does nothing to change the inner code of the firmware.

  • Patches are just like custom presets that you might save in a compression program or your NLE. It is just a collection of your favorite settings... am I right?

  • Ptool allows you to make those aforementioned changes and save them to a file, which is then called a patch (like a custom preset). Ptool also lets you prepare a SD card with your "patched" firmware to be applied to the camera.

  • Driftwood, Flow Motion, and the like are just these saved files, much like a preset that can be shared and loaded into your NLE system.

  • Using Ptool, you can make your own patch... true?

  • If you can use Ptool to make your own patch, you can share it much like Driftwood, etc... right?

  • If that is all true, Ptool has a function to save your patch for sharing and later use... correct?

Either I finally got it, or I took the wrong train and am heading to territories unknown...

Which is it? :-)

All guidance is Truly Appreciated!

Thanks...

As hardware differences go there haven't been that many change. The sensor stayed the same since Gf1. And I believe the image processor has been the same since Gf2. How do the Panasonic firmwares work ? Is there a kernel/driver layer on top of witch we have the user space ? And if so is it possible to bring the functions of the latest firmware to all the previous Gf series cameras ?

This first test was made to see if there where any banding improvement, and are stills taken from video.

patch:
mpgxsvcd
AVC-HD High settings. 42 mb/sec 1080p AQ = 4 and 34
mb/sec 720p AQ = 2. Gop default. No other AVC-HD
changes.

settings:
-iso:320
-mode: vibrant
-shutter: 25
-wb: 3400k

with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4,
shooted at f2 with a macro conversion ring
(i shooted in macro because thats the only time when i can see any banding issue, at least in the lcd of the gh2)

to get the unhacked firmware, pass the panasonic original firmware through the ptools, selecting no patches, and save it with a higher last number, so that the camera will update the firmware once it gets loaded on the sd card (it doesn´t work directly to the sd card)
please, those that will post other comparisons, please remember to type all the settings as i did above.

I then installed the 88mbs patch. I named it GH2__V13.bin. My current cards aren't fast enough to support it so I tried to load Panasonic's firware GH2_V11. The firware would not load.

I then tried to reinstall the 44mbs patch and it worked.

Now the camera won't recognize any firware when it's loaded.

I have tried to load the panasonic firmware back multiple times. I've tried it named as GH2__V12.bin and GH2__V20 and GH2__V13
