I will simply outline my findings, so that you can create your own patch settings to suit your needs:

* Increasing the overall bitrate will decrease reliability while doing nothing to improve video quality or increase the recorded bit rate. Just leave it at the default 18 Mbps.
* SH and H modes are equivalent. Feel free to program them with different bit rates and switch between them.
* The GH1 codec accumulates errors over the length of the GOP. Thus you need to keep the GOP somewhat short, under 12 frames or so, to keep the errors from becoming visible. Shortening the GOP increases the recorded bit rate and decreases reliability. I settled on 10 frames.
* Using a GOP 10 frames long: no failures with the bit rate set below 27 Mbps; failures were produced with great difficulty at 27 Mbps; failures occurred infrequently at 30 Mbps, and easily at 33 Mbps. I settled on SH=27 and H=25.
* No differences in reliability were observed between a Transcend class-6 card, a SanDisk Extreme HD Video UHS 30 MB/sec card, and a SanDisk Extreme 30 MB/s Edition card. It would seem that the bottleneck is not the card, even though failures are shown with a card write failure message.
* Changing the overall bitrate 2 or video buffer size produced no change in reliability, recorded bit rate, or video quality.

On the GH1, 720p remains my favorite shooting mode due to this camera's lack of 30 fps in 1080p, and because there is much less jello effect in 720p.]]>

Is there a way to hack tho focus acceleration slope such that the speed at which we handle the focus ring doesn't matter? Turning 90 degree in one direction slowly then reverting to the initial position at a greater speed, do not put you back at the same focusing distance (which is normal with this acceleration behavior.)

This is a problem when wanting to control the focus from an external motor (putting a step motor to turn the focus ring at predefined distance for instance).

So, I'm wondering if it is possible to cancel this behavior, such that 'n' steps on the focus ring always produce the same update, at whatever speed we moved it.]]>

Is it possible to record 1080x2581 (2.39:1) AVCHD with GH13 or Gh2 ??? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1427/is-it-possible-to-record-1080x2581-2.391-avchd-with-gh13-or-gh2- Fri, 11 Nov 2011 17:24:30 +0000 kronstadt 1427@/talks/discussions The 2X crop factor is the greatest annoyance with GH1 and GH2, which also means that a whole lot needs to be spent on super wide lenses in order to get a shot just wide enough. One way to battle that is to use Anamorphic adaptors, and those cost an arm and a leg, and are very difficult to handle (imagine follow-focusing both the lens and the anamorphic adaptor simultaneously; or imagine having to remove and re-attach the anamorphic adapter every time you change a lens).

It is possible to record AVCHD 1080p (height). But what is the maximum WIDTH of the video that can be recorded with GH13 and GH2? Are we limited to 1920, or is it possible to go wider with some sort of a hack/patch? Would it be possible to record 1080x2581 for example? That's the industry standard 2.39:1 aspect ratio that we get in most Hollywood and DVD productions these days.

If it would be possible, it would mean that those folks who don't have the fortune to afford anamorphic lenses, can still use their existing lenses and produce a picture that is at least in the same aspect ratio as cinema standard (albeit without the oouie flares and anamorphic bokeh). The other major benefit would be that a 20mm lens can be used as a ~27mm, rather than a 40mm.

Is it currently possible? if not, is it in development?

I noticed that for MPEG there's a checkbox for 4:2:2 color sampling. And MPEG videos (with Powell's 100mbps and with Blackout-Powell's patch) do look somewhat richer in color. The trouble is that MPEG does not come in 1080p 23.976fps.

So I'm wondering, Vitaliy, do you plan to introduce 4:2:2 color sampling also for AVCHD in 1080p24 ??? (would be awesome to have this)]]>
GH2 ISO *switches* to AUTO when hitting Record? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1417/gh2-iso-switches-to-auto-when-hitting-record Thu, 10 Nov 2011 22:17:44 +0000 Huckster 1417@/talks/discussions
I just noticed that when I hit "Record" in Movie mode (or Manual mode), my ISO setting changes to AUTO, no matter what it was previously set to. After hitting STOP, the ISO setting reverts back to the previously set rating.

Does anyone else notice this glitch on their GH2?

It doesn't seem to be affecting the image... but it's hard to tell exactly. It's certainly disturbing as I definitely wouldn't want the ISO to be sliding around in auto mode while recording.

Might this be some sort of side effect of the new PTool v3.63d?]]>

(long time reader, first time joiner/poster)

So I came back from London with 4 hours worth of lens-test footage - mostly night-shoots and hand-held. This was my first shoot with my Gh1 re-born as a Gh13 after I applied the hack with LPowell 100mbps settings, with Overall Bitrate set at 108,000,000. I shot everything in FHD AVCHD, on 32GB class 10 Transcend cards. As far as I can remember, my Gh13 never crashed or frose.

The footage looks great, but it's not as "mind-blowing" as I expected.

Once I came back I got a software called Mediainfo (free from SourceForge), so as to check bit-rates, fps etc (great simple software). And I was pretty upset to find out that most of my videos are in 25fps (NOT 24fps or 23.976fps as I expected) and have bit-rates ranging from 15 to 20mbps. Is this normal??? I mean where's the 100mbps? or at least the 50mbps? Am I missing something?

So , how can I make those videos be capturing in TRUE 24fps with bit-rates as high as 40, 50, or even 86mbps, or even higher???

Many Thanks in advance for your advices and suggestions.

still picture hacks for pany u43 - Possible to use auto-iso in M mode? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1394/still-picture-hacks-for-pany-u43-possible-to-use-auto-iso-in-m-mode- Wed, 09 Nov 2011 03:24:45 +0000 Derway 1394@/talks/discussions
For underwater photo, we always use strobe, and either A mode, (to maximize control of DOF and balance ambient and strobe exposure), or full M mode, to control blur and DOF, and balance the 2 exposures.

But with these pana cams, at these price ranges, there is no way to do the obvious. The A mode with flash forced on, is broken, since it allows 1/30 or 1/60 sec SS, which is way too slow, and will blur fish. Hoping that "intelligent ISO" will notice the movement, and do the right thing is absurd.

Is there a hack for specifying what the slowest SS allowed in "A mode, with flash" should be? (And bump the ISO if it is in auto, or just leave the exposure low, if not in auto ISO).

The alternative is to use full M mode, to specify SS and A for control over DOF, blurring, and ambient/strobe exposure balance. But this is so much easier in oly PENs, for example, which allow you to use auto iso in M mode, in 1/3 EV steps.

So, is there a hack for this? To make auto iso in M mode, set the ISO according to the meter reading? This sounds tougher.

Are these hacks possible? And for what cameras?

If you wanted to really beat the OLY/Nikon/Canon crowed, allowing us to use exposure compensation in M mode, to shift the ISO selection accordingly, would be awesome!

Is the firmware fully disassembled at this point? Can we all work on it too?

Thanks!

https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software

GH2:
- Improved bitrate patches
- Improved GOP patches.
- Improved MJPEG size patches.
- Added quantizer patches.
- Added few other encoder related patches.
- Few fixes, including 24L behaviour.

1. You'll need this base firmware:
http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/330/new-gh2-firmware-leak

2. StreamParser by Chris Brandin as help tool to analyse AVCHD streams -
https://www.personal-view.com/faqs/gh2-hack/ptool-software

Other good idea is also use trial version of Elecard StremEye - http://www.elecard.com/en/download/products.html

3. Remember that Testers section patches are for testers. Use simple bitrate patches.

4. How can I make encoder hold better in low detailed scenes?
Use Auto Quantizer patches.

5. How to update firmware:
a. Load GH2 1.0E firmware, see 1. how to get it.
b. Check all necessary patches, Version increment must be always checked.
c. Save firmware. Just change last digit to any number you want.
d. Copy firmware to root of SD card. Fully charge you battery. Do not even attempt to use AC coupler!
e. Power off your camera if it was on.
f. Power on camera. After this press (not hold) green play button.
g. You'll see hourglass and prompt to update.
h. Press down arrow and after this Menu/set.
i. Wait until upgrade will be completed.

6. How to privide reports in this topic?
0. Post here only problems and questions about new patches. For all else we have special topics.
a. Use systematic approach (one-two changes at a time with careful thinking).
b. Shift-Click on round button in PTool to save your particular settings.
c. Paste here settings with detailed observation + MediaInfo screenshot + StreamAnalizer screenshot.

7. If anyone wants to share uncompressed video - you can use http://www.pipebytes.com/ or http://www.sendoid.com/ to instantly share very large files.
Of course you need good connection as it uses p2p tech.

I've been having problems with files longer than 4 minutes. The camera just shuts off at about 3:58, and Final Cut wont recognise the file, although shorter files on the same card are recognised sometimes. I'm also getting the '!' logo over the file picture in playback mode (see image attached)

Is this problem solved by using the UHS-1 Sandisk cards?
