10Gbps Wi-Fi is coming, good for video apps http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10502/10gbps-wi-fi-is-coming-good-for-video-apps Sat, 31 May 2014 09:43:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10502@/talks/discussions

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that it has** successfully achieved the industry’s first 10Gbps Wi-Fi service in laboratory trials** at Huawei’s campus in Shenzhen. This important milestone, which delivered data over Wi-Fi 10 times faster than the fastest existing Wi-Fi capability commercially available today, will enable a new era of big data applications by using ultra-fast Wi-Fi technology based on advanced next generation architecture to boost data rates to 10Gbps.

The 10Gbps Wi-Fi prototype achieved a record transmission data rate of 10.53Gbps on 5GHz frequency bands. The success of this prototype development, and the ten folds increase in spectrum efficiency that made it possible, paves the way for the validation of technologies needed to support the creation of next generation Wi-Fi. Huawei believes that ultrafast Wi-Fi could become commercially available from 2018 pending the agreement of global standards requirements and sufficient chipset availability.

A post on eBay's corporate site said that cyber-attackers accessed the information after obtaining "a small number of employee log-in credentials", allowing them to access its systems - something it only became aware of a fortnight ago.

"The database... included eBay customers' name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth," it said.

"However, the database did not contain financial information or other confidential personal information.

"Extensive forensics subsequently identified the compromised eBay database, resulting in the company's announcement today."

Samsung OLED TVs production can be cancelled http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10325/samsung-oled-tvs-production-can-be-cancelled Tue, 06 May 2014 21:24:32 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10325@/talks/discussions

Samsung Electronics has abandoned plans for a new facility to manufacture next-generation display panels for televisions, deterred by the inefficiency of production amid intense price competition in the TV market.

An OLED TV forms a picture on a thin, bendable layer of organic light-emitting diodes. The South Korean company released sets last year at home and in the U.S. But the products did not fare well, in large part because of hefty price tags. A 55-inch model initially went for 15 million won ($14,700).

Samsung makes the OLED panels at a small-scale production facility at its Tangjeong complex. Investment has been called off for a larger facility that would have been in place by the end of the year.

HDMI FORUM RELEASES VERSION 2.0 OF THE HDMI SPECIFICATION

Increased bandwidth provides the infrastructure for new features that will drive the next generation of consumer entertainment

BERLIN, Germany - September 4, 2013 – IFA 2013 – HDMI Forum, Inc., a non-profit, mutual benefit corporation, today announced the release of Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification. This latest HDMI Specification, the first to be developed by the HDMI Forum, offers a significant increase in bandwidth (up to 18Gbps) to support new features such as 4K@50/60 (2160p), which is 4 times the clarity of 1080p/60 video resolution; 32 audio channels; as well as dynamic auto lip-sync and extensions to CEC. The complete Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification is available to Adopters on the HDMI Adopter Extranet. HDMI Licensing, LLC will host a press conference to discuss the new features of the HDMI 2.0 Specification at IFA 2013 in Berlin on Friday, September 6 at 12:00pm in the TecWatch Forum area of Hall 11.1.

Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification, which is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification, was developed by the HDMI Forum's Technical Working Group whose members represent some of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, personal computers, mobile devices, cables and components. The HDMI Forum currently has a membership of 88 companies.

"The introduction of the HDMI 2.0 Specification represents a major milestone for the HDMI Forum," said Robert Blanchard of Sony Corporation, president of the HDMI Forum. "Our members collaborated closely to take the highly successful HDMI Specification to the next level by expanding audio and video features for consumer electronics applications."

The HDMI Forum has chosen HDMI Licensing, LLC to be the Agent to license Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification. In this role, HDMI Licensing, LLC will provide marketing, promotional, licensing and administrative services, as well as education on the benefits of the HDMI Specification to adopters, retailers, and consumers.

"We are pleased to continue our work in supporting the HDMI Adopter base as well as the entire HDMI ecosystem," said Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. "Adopters can now continue to develop new product functionality over the HDMI interface as well as look to HDMI Licensing, LLC as their single contact for all their licensing and administrative needs."

Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification does not define new cables or new connectors. Current High Speed cables (category 2 cables) are capable of carrying the increased bandwidth.

The HDMI 2.0 Compliance Test Specification (CTS) is expected to be released before the end of 2013.

For more information about Version 2.0 of the HDMI Specification please visit http://www.hdmi.org.

    Professional video market grows 55% http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10094/professional-video-market-grows-55 Mon, 07 Apr 2014 11:07:40 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10094@/talks/discussions

Culminating a six-year period of growth, the global market for professional broadcast equipment and services reached US$63 billion in 2013, up 52% from US$41 billion in 2007, according to IHS.

The rapid growth has been driven by a significant rise in shipments of customer-premises equipment (CPE) fueled by the digitization of pay TV subscribers. The market's expansion also has been propelled by a rise in transport services, driven by an increasing number of linear channels and non-linear views by consumers.

While the factors that have powered the growth of the market are expected to remain in force through 2017, total spending on equipment is expected to slow significantly. Many core markets in North America, Western Europe and East Asia are facing slower CPE shipment growth, the firm said.

    4K AltaSens sensor http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9988/4k-altasens-sensor Fri, 28 Mar 2014 01:20:56 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 9988@/talks/discussions

AltaSens, Inc., a leading pioneer in high-resolution CMOS imaging system-on-chip (iSoC) sensors at HD format, introduced its first 4K camera module for commercial sale: the 4K Pro RGB. The state-of-art camera module generates 4K through HD video at multiple optical formats and frame rates. The high-end module can be used for broadcast, movie and TV production, scientific instruments, medical imaging, and UAVs to record video and capture stills.

AltaSens will showcase the 4K Pro RGB at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, from April 7 to 10 in booth C12033.

"We are pleased to offer this sophisticated solution to demanding imaging customers in need of a versatile turnkey camera module," explained Jake Onodera, Executive Vice President. "It is also a superb pathfinder unit for our OEM camera partners using the new AL41410C image sensor."

Lester Kozlowski, AltaSens Founder and CEO, further explained, "This module represents the imminent merging of advanced camera and sensor technology to deliver, without compromise, superior image quality regardless of format or frame rate. We thank JVC Kenwood for enabling this paradigm shift sooner, rather than later."

Camera module features include the following:

    • Turnkey VGA-to-UHD camera engine with up to 13.5 Mpixel image capture
    • Advanced imaging signal processor for on-the-fly format changes with seamless image quality management, including various SNR-enhancing binning modes
    • 4K video mode at 60 fps; full HD video mode at 240 fps
    • Video saves directly to SD card or directly output via HDMI 2.0
    • Still photo capture to SD card

The 4K Pro RGB engine is powered by the combination of the AltaSens AL41410C sensor with advanced JVC KENWOOD imaging-signal processor to deliver HD through 4K and beyond, at multiple frame rates.

The AL41410C is our next generation Super-35 size image sensor. Its ability to generate 4096 x 2160 format images makes the AL41410C an extremely attractive sensor for producing 4K cinema in the latest Ultra HD (UHD) cameras. Operating the sensor at a 3840 x 2160 resolution is ideal for UHD video. Alternatively, the 1920 x 1080 HD format at 240 fps is best for sports broadcast or special effects support where clear slow motion playback is vital. Its native 4512 x 3008 resolution is operable to 50 fps.

The AL41410C is also available in the AltaSens 4K Pro Night-Vision, a new 4K low-light monochrome camera module. The 4K Pro Color Night-Vision camera module will be available in late 2014.

Nikon defeats Sigma in patent infringement suit http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9885/nikon-defeats-sigma-in-patent-infringement-suit Sat, 15 Mar 2014 14:53:52 +0000 ahbleza 9885@/talks/discussions

The Tokyo district court ordered Sigma to pay 1.5 billion JPY (around 14.5 million dollars) compensation to Nikon as a result of the patent infringement case for lenses with VR technology that was filed back in 2011. The lawsuit was based on six Sigma lenses with image stabilization technology. Initially Nikon was looking for a compensations of 12 billion yen (around 116 million dollars).

Nikon obtained the patent related to VR technology in 2002. The content of the patented invention relates to technology wherein a vibration detection device, which detects the amount of camera vibration at angles around photographic objects, prevents the influence of vibration of a motor for lens and thereby allows more accurate photo shots. Sigma affirms that the scope of the patented invention does not include any functions which reduce the influence of camera shake. However, Mr. Osuga, the Judge in Chief, states that the effects of the invention in Nikon’s specification is described as “it allows image blur to be reduced” and that the specification clears that it includes camera shake. Thus, Mr. Osuga stands for Nikon’s assertion. In addition, Mr. Osuga points out that image blur prevention system requires various control functions, and he states that this patented invention of Nikon’s should be rewarded based on the contribution of the patent to the defendant’s products, that is 15%. Therefore, the Tokyo District Court calculated profits earned by Sigma to be a maximum of 10.1 billion JPY, and found compensation of damages to be 15% of the profits of the accused products earned by Sigma

In 2012, the total shipment quantity was 20 million units.

DE: 20 million total interchangeable lens cameras?

Ogawa: Yes, including mirrors. [Ed. note - that is, including both mirrorless and DSLRs] Now, the average age is mid-40s and the percentage of females went up to 30%. This is thanks to, we believe, Olympus introducing the Olympus Pen. That contributed to the significant change in the demographics. (By the way, out of 20 million units, four million units were mirrorless or CSC.)

DE: Four million, out of 20?

    Ogawa: Yes.

    DE: Ah, so about 20%.

Ogawa: Yes, the rest, over 16 million units, were mainly SLR.

    ........

Ogawa: With the development of output devices like 4K TVs, we probably could say the same thing about movies as well, for the future. We are also preparing for that future as well, specifically movies. I believe that the TruePic VII processor we’ve newly developed for the E-M1 will have much better quality and performance than the competition.

Now we’re working on the next generation engine as well. For that next generation engine, we are expecting that movie sharing will be the new demand coming. So we are prepared for that.

When we look at today’s movie sharing, social networking or websites like YouTube and some others, perhaps today's OM-D movie quality is good enough. So I believe that movie quality will matter more when 4K TV penetration becomes really high. Then we have to have our device ready for it.

DE: Mr. Ogawa mentioned that contrast detect is more accurate than phase detect. That’s certainly the case when you have a separate phase detect sensor, and the PD sensor might be out of position. But I was surprised that when you have phase detect elements on chip, PD is actually still less accurate than contrast detect even though they’re right on the same chip as the imaging pixels.

Shirota: Yes, comparing contrast auto focus and phase detection auto focus with a separate sensor, the phase detection is inferior in terms of accuracy. However, with on-chip phase detection, that inferiority will go away. It’s better in terms of accuracy compared to this conventional way.

This looks pretty interesting. It's got a fast wide lens and with 120fps at 720p it could be a great camera to have around on shoots. I want one if the image quality is good.
