HDMI connectors in small cameras can go away http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15653/hdmi-connectors-in-small-cameras-can-go-away Sun, 04 Sep 2016 06:36:14 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 15653@/talks/discussions

HDMI Licensing, LLC today announced that it is releasing the HDMI Alternate Mode (“Alt Mode”) developed by the HDMI Founders for the USB Type-C™ Specification. This will allow HDMI-enabled source devices to utilize a USB Type-C connector to directly connect to HDMI-enabled displays, and deliver native HDMI signals over a simple cable without the need for cumbersome protocol and connector adapters or dongles.

image

This enables two of the most popular solutions for connectivity to come together—the small form factor, reversible, and multi-purpose USB Type-C connector being adopted by smartphones, tablets and PC products, and HDMI, which is the leading display interface with an installed base of billions of displays. Almost 290 million HDMI-enabled display devices are expected to ship in 2016, including projectors, monitors and 100 percent of flat panel TVs.

HDMI Alt Mode will support the full range of HDMI 1.4b features such as: resolutions up to 4K, Audio Return Channel (ARC), 3D, HDMI Ethernet Channel, and Consumer Electronic Control (CEC). The HDMI cable will utilize the USB Type-C connector on the source side and any HDMI connector on the display side. Unlike the other Alt Mode display technologies which require various adapters or dongles to connect to HDMI displays, HDMI Alt Mode enables an easy connection via a simple USB Type-C to HDMI cable.

For now it is only HDMI 1.4b, but it is enough good inceptive to save on connectors and leave only one - USB-C .

To properly mess with consumer mind it is enough to have 3 main lines - G for DSLR like bodies, GX for Sony NEX like design and GH for guys who also want good video and want to pay premium.

But, as they understood, just 3 lines is not enough. They also want to make 4 levels inside each of this 3 lines.

Now they will have GH5 for pros, GH50 for one who pretend to be one, GH500 for shit looking like good camera and GH5000 for real trash.

Most probably on upcoming Photokina GH5 will be new camera having 4K at 60fps, GH4 will be renamed as GH50, GH3 will be renamed GH500 and GH2 will make another entry as GH5000. Joking.

HEVC based DVB-T2 in 1080p50 starting in Germany on 2016-06-01 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15148/hevc-based-dvb-t2-in-1080p50-starting-in-germany-on-2016-06-01 Mon, 30 May 2016 15:34:58 +0000 karl 15148@/talks/discussions Two days from now we'll know what the "theoretically best terrestic over-the-air TV broadcast service" announced so far will look like.

I'm writing "theoretically", because on paper the specifications look promising: HEVC encoded 1080p50 video - that's better than the existing 1080i format broadcasted over DVB-T2 in other countries. And up to 26.56 Mbit/s per channel would, theoretically, be enough for very good quality.

But then of course we all know that cost reduction will dictate that not quite the possible quality will be seen in pratice. They will certainly squeeze multiple programmes into those 25.56 Mbit/s, and at least one moronic TV-station (ZDF) has already announced that they will feed the broadcast from their 720p50 production infrastructure, only "upscaling" right before HEVC encoding. (And yes, ZDF mostly gets 1080i material, which they first have to downscale, de-interlace and frame-interpolate to 720p50 - so we can be sure that at least that channel will look like crap.)

But still I'm curious to see what this will look like and tune my LG OLED TV to the new terrestial signal, just for the fun of it.

(To anyone already receiving 4k channels via sattelite, this is certainly boring news - but even not many of those send progressive 50 frames per second.)

SanDisk Corp. is in advanced talks to sell itself to Western Digital Corp., and the two storage makers could reach a deal as soon as this week, people with knowledge of the matter said.

Western Digital is discussing a price of between $80 and $90 per SanDisk share, according to two of the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. SanDisk closed at $72 in New York trading on Monday. While no agreement has been signed and talks could still fall apart, negotiations accelerated over the weekend, the people said.

SanDisk has spoken with both Western Digital and Micron Technology Inc. about a deal, people familiar with the matter said last week. The company plans to report earnings Oct. 21 after the market closes.

Fully reflective, multi-spectral camera using two image sensors behind a common lens http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15132/-fully-reflective-multi-spectral-camera-using-two-image-sensors-behind-a-common-lens Thu, 26 May 2016 16:26:43 +0000 karl 15132@/talks/discussions Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS will present a fully reflective, multi-spectral camera using two image sensors behind a common lens at the Optatec International Trade Show in Frankfurt / Germany from June 7th.

Systems currently available on the market use optics, materials and components individually adapted for various spectral ranges. Because conventional glasses are not transparent in the infrared spectral range, lenses are often made of expensive semiconductor materials. In addition, images captured using multiple cameras from different directions are always subject to a parallax. This results in complicated post-processing, requiring precise classification of image data provided by the different cameras.

»These disadvantages can be overcome with our multi-spectral camera which produces congruent, parallax-free images using multiple detectors through a single lens.« says Fraunhofer IPMS Business Unit Manager Dr. Sebastian Meyer. He stresses, »Using mirrors instead of lenses for the optical system not only provides the opportunity to replace commonly available camera systems, but also offers the chance for the creation of new applications for which weight and space are critical.«

Seizing the opportunity, Dr. Meyer and his team have developed a fully reflective, multi-spectral camera that uses two image sensors behind a common lens. The lens is designed as a special tilted mirror system which, because of its construction, avoids the chromatic aberrations or central obscuration effects occurring in current systems. Individual mirror surfaces are designed in a partially aspheric manner to correct geometric aberrations and are provided with suitable coatings to ensure high reflectivity over a wide spectral range. Due to the parallax-free simultaneous image capturing in different spectral ranges through a single lens resulting from this approach, both the previous need for a second lens as well as subsequent elaborate post-processing of image data have been eliminated. The choice of the spectral range of the reflective optics is then limited only by the detectors available.

Fraunhofer IPMS researchers have now integrated the lens and image sensors with electronics and software in a first functional demonstrator. Visitors to the Optatec International Trade Show for optical technologies, components and systems in Frankfurt from June 7-9 have the opportunity to view the prototype and tap into Fraunhofer IPMS expertise.

The exhibition can be found at the Fraunhofer Society collective Stand D56 in Hall 3.

From there you can use, for example, an iPad to view the video and dynamically adjust white balance, tint, exposure and lens distortion in real time for each camera. You can monitor the video in three different ways -- Perspective, Panoramic and Headset -- so you can see just how your viewers will see your content, whether that's on a mobile device, in a Web browser or in a VR headset.

The Sphere app can then be used to live-stream the 360-degree video to platforms like Wowza and YouTube, which now supports live-streaming 360-degree content.

"With the ability to stream to any destination at bit rates of up to 10Mbps and the flexibility to work with any rigged camera setup from GoPro to RED, Sphere will be the go-to solution for high-quality 360 streaming," said Teradek Brand Manager Topher DeLancy. "As VR grows we feel it will be another powerhouse media division alongside cinema, gaming and broadcast."

The Teradek Sphere will be available in June for $3,000 (approximately AU$3,875 or £2,100), but you can get a taste of its performance right now via a live-stream of the NAB 2016 convention or by downloading the free iOS app.

Panasonic and Fujifilm sharing continues http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7214/panasonic-and-fujifilm-sharing-continues Tue, 11 Jun 2013 02:45:33 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7214@/talks/discussions After combining LSI efforts they move to sensors.

  • Industry's highest dynamic range of 88dB to prevent highlight clipping and produce a vivid and texture-rich image even in low light
  • 1.2 times higher sensitivity than conventional sensors to capture clear images even in low light
  • Range of incident angle expanded to 60 degrees for faithful color reproduction
  • Offering high reliability for broader applications

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) and Panasonic Corporation (President: Kazuhiro Tsuga) have developed organic CMOS image sensor technology that uses an organic photoelectric conversion layer with a photoelectric conversion property at the light receiving section of an image sensor to achieve performance beyond that of conventional image sensors. Applying this technology to the image sensors of digital cameras and other imaging devices expands its dynamic range and enhances sensitivity*4 further to prevent highlight clipping in bright scenes and capture a dark subject with vivid colors and rich textures.

image

The industry has put into continuous efforts to explore image sensor technologies for increasing their number of pixels. This has dramatically improved sensor resolutions, but, in order to further boost image quality, it is necessary to expand the dynamic range, enhance sensitivity and prevent cross-talk or color mixing between pixels. Panasonic took advantage of its semiconductor device technology to boost image quality for its high-performance image sensors. Fujifilm, on the other hand, has developed highly-reliable organic photoelectric conversion layer with high absorption coefficient to be used on a sensor's light receiving section instead of silicon photodiode5 in its effort to build a new image sensor technology. In the latest collaboration, Fujifilm and Panasonic have combined Fujifilm's organic photoelectric conversion layer technology with Panasonic's semiconductor device technology to jointly develop an organic CMOS image sensor that outperforms conventional image sensors. The new organic CMOS image sensor offers the industry's highest dynamic range of 88dB, advanced sensitivity 1.2 times more sensitive than conventional sensors and broader range of incident angle6 to enable the production of more sensitive and compact cameras with better image quality. The two companies will promote the application of this organic CMOS image sensor technology to a wide range of products including security cameras, in-vehicle cameras, mobile device and digital cameras

Vimeo replies to criticism of their streaming video quality http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12800/vimeo-replies-to-criticism-of-their-streaming-video-quality Mon, 13 Apr 2015 18:23:59 +0000 LPowell 12800@/talks/discussions I've subscribed to Vimeo Plus for the last 5 years and used it for hosting 1080p videos for website embedding and providing downloads of the original video files to clients. Like YouTube, Vimeo re-encodes uploaded videos for online streaming and supports 720p and 1080p resolutions. I have no complaints about Vimeo's service and customer support, they've always been reliable and conscientious.

The image quality of Vimeo's streaming videos, however, has to my eyes deteriorated to the point where it is no longer acceptable. It actually makes my work look BAD to my clients' eyes. Here is a short 30-second example, originally encoded at 20Mbps (Blu-ray quality). First the Vimeo version, then YouTube's, be sure your settings allow you to watch each video in full-screen 1080p:

I also invite those interested to download the original 74MB MP4 video file from that Vimeo page and compare the image quality to these online versions. While the original is obviously much sharper, to my eyes the YouTube version is acceptable while the Vimeo version is unacceptably degraded to the point where it actually looks out of focus.

I wrote Vimeo asking if their Vimeo Pro service offers any better video quality. Here is an excerpt from their reply:

There is no difference between the encoding processes for Vimeo Plus and Vimeo PRO. That said, I’m not seeing much of a difference between the version that we’ve encoded and the original file. Have you tried encoding that video at a higher bitrate and then replacing it, to see if that makes a difference? Please give that a shot, and let us know if you’re still not satisfied with the results!

Is there anyone else who can't see much difference between the original MP4 and that POS?

In 2016, the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year will travel half way around the globe to receive the “Radius” challenge cup in Essen, Germany. Blackmagic Industrial Design Team led by Simon Kidd from Australia is to receive the highest honorary title of the Red Dot Design Award. Over the years, the designers from Down Under have repeatedly convinced the Red Dot jury of their exceptional design quality. This consistent high-level performance will be honoured, when the Blackmagic Industrial Design Team accepts the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2016 award on the large opera stage of Essen’s Aalto-Theater during the Red Dot Gala on 4 July 2016.

Blackmagic Design is the first Red Dot: Design Team of the Year from Australia. The company has rapidly grown over the last decade to become one of the world’s leading innovators and manufacturers of creative video technology. Dynamically emerging from a tech start-up to become a global industry leader, they produce an end-to-end suite of hardware and software products used in films, television programs, advertisements and news broadcasts around the world. Their cameras and software are used on many acclaimed Hollywood films including The Martian, Mad Max: Fury Road, Furious 7 and Avatar. Blackmagic’s driving philosophy is to foster true creativity by making the highest quality video affordable for everyone. The design team combines this approach with its dedication to innovation, quality and rapid product development, and in this way revolutionises the industry.

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award, says, “Simon Kidd’s team has developed a reputation for combining user-centred design with highly innovative engineering to consistently deliver products that not only challenge, but change markets. Their strong product language is backed by a deep-rooted design philosophy that is focused on use and function in an uncompromising way. That makes Blackmagic Design the deserved recipient of the highest Red Dot title in 2016.”

Simon Kidd, Director of Industrial Design at Blackmagic has built and led the design team since its inception 10 years ago and has become known for ground-breaking, industry-changing designs that have challenged conventional thinking in a traditionally conservative industry: “We are honoured to receive this coveted award and consider it the highest honour in global design. It recognises our unwavering commitment to making the highest quality video affordable for everyone through incredibly well-designed, high quality, innovative products. To be recognised among the top design-led businesses in the world truly endorses this commitment. We are a young company with an evolving design legacy and we consider this historic award to be validation of the work that we have done to date... and inspiration for the team to go forward.”

The title of honour „Red Dot: Design Team of the Year“ is not one that can be applied for. Since 1988, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has every year selected a design team that has, over the years, earned a reputation for excellent product design. Past winners include companies such as Mercedes Benz, frogdesign, Audi, Sony, Apple, adidas, LG Electronics, Porsche, Grohe, Veryday and, in 2015, Robert Sachon & Bosch Home Appliances Design Team. Robert Sachon, Head of Design at Bosch Home Appliances, will hand over the “Radius” challenge cup to Simon Kidd at the Red Dot Gala 2016 in Essen.

Traditionally, the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year presents its achievements in a self-designed special exhibition. This is a highlight of the four-week exhibition “Design on Stage – Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016” at the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany. Blackmagic Industrial Design Team led by Simon Kidd will present its achievements in Essen from 4 July, the day of the Red Dot Gala.

Don't they have some big brown sphere award for companies who deliver products one year after your preorder?
