Samsung's Stacked ISOCELL Image Sensor http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19100/samsungs-stacked-isocell-image-sensor Wed, 28 Feb 2018 08:09:01 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19100@/talks/discussions

The new 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3 with integrated DRAM supports super-slow motion, low-light shooting, real-time HDR imaging, while minimizing picture distortion Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced the newest addition to its ISOCELL image sensor family, the 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3. The 1.4-micrometer (μm) 12-megapixel (Mp) image sensor with integrated dynamic random access memory (DRAM) delivers fast data readout speeds to capture both rapid movements in super-slow motion and sharper still photographs with less noise and distortion.

image

“Samsung’s ISOCELL image sensors have made great leaps over the generations, with technologies such as ISOCELL for high color fidelity and Dual Pixel for ultra-fast autofocusing, bringing the smartphone camera ever closer to DSLR-grade photography,” said Ben K. Hur, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. “With an added DRAM layer, Samsung’s new 3-stack ISOCELL Fast 2L3 will enable users to create more unique and mesmerizing content.”

image

Conventional image sensors are constructed with two silicon layers; a pixel array layer that converts light information into an electric signal, and an analog logic layer that processes the electric signal into digital code. The digital code is then sent via MIPI interface to the device’s mobile processor for further image tuning before being saved to the device’s DRAM. While all these steps are done instantaneously to implement features like zero-shutter lag, capturing smooth super-slow-motion video requires image readouts at a much higher rate.

Delivering an advanced solution, the Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is a high speed 3-stack CMOS image sensor designed with the company’s two-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4 DRAM attached below the analog logic layer. With the integration, the image sensor can temporarily store a larger number of frames taken in high speed quickly onto the sensor’s DRAM layer before sending frames out to the mobile processor and then to the device’s DRAM. This not only allows the sensor to capture a full-frame snapshot at 1/120 of a second but also to record super-slow motion video at up to 960 frames per second (fps). With 960fps recording, which is 32 times the typical filming speed (30fps), recording moments such as a child hitting his or her first game-winning homerun, a baby taking his or her first step, or a friend doing a gazelle flip on a skateboard becomes much more dramatic.

In addition to super slow motion video, fast readout can hugely enhance the photography experience. Since the sensor captures an image at very high speeds, it significantly reduces the ‘jello-effect,’ or image distortion, when taking a picture of fast-moving objects, for example helicopter rotor blades. By storing multiple frames in the split of a second, the sensor can support 3-Dimensional Noise Reduction (3DNR) for clearer pictures when shooting in low-light, as well as real time high-dynamic-range (HDR) imaging, and detect even the slightest hint of movement for automatic instant slow-motion recording.

The image sensor is also equipped with Dual Pixel technology, which allows each and every one of the 12-million pixels of the image sensor to employ two photodiodes that respectively work as a phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) agent. With ultra-fast auto-focus in any lighting condition, it will be harder to miss capturing important moments before they pass by.

The Samsung ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is currently in mass production.

While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony's Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11. Like the converter MC-11, the lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion.

The lineup will include the Art line set of seven prime lenses covering 14mm to 135mm. It will also include two models that SIGMA will be exhibiting at CP+ 2018: 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art (launch date TBD). Further, SIGMA plans to introduce additional Sony E-mount models in the Art line going forward.

Note: This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony Corporation.

Key features

  1. Autofocus tuned for each lens
Thanks to an autofocus drive control program tuned for each lens and high-speed data transmission, the lenses will offer high-speed autofocus at the same performance level as that of a lens designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras. In particular, in E-mount cameras offering Sony's Fast Hybrid AF, AF-C mode will deliver exceptional subject following performance. Moreover, autofocus will remain extremely precise even in those E-mount cameras offering only contrast AF.
  2. Compatible with in-camera image stabilization
The lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization. The Sony E-mount camera senses the focal length of the lens and automatically optimizes image stabilization performance.
  3. Data loaded for compatibility with in-camera aberration correction The lenses will be fully compatible with in-camera aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion. By matching corrections to the optical characteristics of the lens, this function takes image quality to an even higher level.
  4. Native mount for a more rigid and stable feel Making the mount native to the lens makes possible a more rigid and stable feel to the lens. Featuring a special surface treatment to enhance strength, the brass bayonet mount offers a high-precision fit and exceptional durability. The mount connection area incorporates rubber sealing for dust- and splash-proof construction.

Affordable 8K LCD TVs to come this year, will use AUO panels http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/19068/affordable-8k-lcd-tvs-to-come-this-year-will-use-auo-panels Thu, 22 Feb 2018 02:30:55 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 19068@/talks/discussions

AU Optronics (AUO) will begin to ship 8K TV panels in sizes ranging from 65- to 85-inch in the first half of 2018 according to Liao Wei-lun, president of AUO's video products business group.

Shipments of TV panels in 65-inch and above sizes will be a major focus of AUO as global sales of 65- and 70-inch TVs and display products are expected to grow 40% and 50% on year, respectively, in 2018, Liao reasoned.

The penetration rate of 65-inch and above sizes of 8K TVs will start gaining momentum in 2018 and reach 10% in 2020, Liao said, adding that AUO will begin volume production of 8K TV panels soon to cash in on the emerging trend.

Demand for 4K TV panels will also remain strong in 2018 as the penetration of 4K TVs is expected to hike to over 40% in 2018, from 30% a year earlier, with 4K displays becoming a standard for 50-inch and larger TV products in the year, Liao added.

Good news.

Sony Corporation today announced that it has developed a 1.46 effective megapixel back-illuminated CMOS image sensor equipped with a Global Shutter function*1. The newly developed pixel-parallel analog-to-digital converters provide the function to instantly convert the analog signal from all pixels, simultaneously exposed, to a digital signal in parallel. This new technology was announced at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) on February 11, 2018 in San Francisco in the United States.

    image

CMOS image sensors using the conventional column A/D conversion method read out the photoelectrically converted analog signals from pixels row by row, which results in image distortion (focal plane distortion) caused by the time shift due to the row-by-row readout.

The new Sony sensor comes with newly developed low-current, compact A/D converters positioned beneath each pixel. These A/D converters instantly convert the analog signal from all the simultaneously exposed pixels in parallel to a digital signal to temporarily store it in digital memory. This architecture eliminates focal plane distortion due to readout time shift, making it possible to provide a Global Shutter function1, an industry-first for a high-sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS sensor with pixel-parallel A/D Converter with more than one megapixel3.

The inclusion of nearly 1,000 times as many A/D converters compared to the traditional column A/D conversion method2 means an increased demand for current. Sony addressed this issue by developing a compact 14-bit A/D converter which boasts the industry’s best performance4 in low-current operation.

Both the A/D converter and digital memory spaces are secured in a stacked configuration with these elements integrated into the bottom chip. The connection between each pixel on the top chip uses Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connection*5, a technology that Sony put into mass production as a world-first in January 2016.

In addition, a newly developed data transfer mechanism is implemented into the sensor to enable the high-speed massively parallel readout data required for the A/D conversion process.

    Main Features

Global Shutter function achieved in a high-sensitivity back-illuminated CMOS image sensor by using the following key technologies: Low-current, compact pixel-parallel A/D converter. In order to curtail power consumption, the new converter uses comparators that operate with subthreshold currents, resulting in the industry’s best-performing4, low current, compact 14-bit A/D converter. This overcomes the issue of the increased demand for current due to the inclusion of nearly 1,000 times as many A/D converters in comparison with the traditional column A/D conversion method2.

    Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connection
To achieve the parallel A/D conversion for all pixels, Sony has developed a technology which makes it possible to include approximately three million Cu-Cu (copper-copper) connections*5 in one sensor. The Cu-Cu connection provides electrical continuity between the pixel and logic substrate, while securing space for implementing as many as 1.46 million A/D converters, the same number as the effective megapixels, as well as the digital memory.

    High-speed data transfer construction
Sony has developed a new readout circuit to support the massively parallel digital signal transfer required in the A/D conversion process using 1.46 million A/D converters, making it possible to read and write all the pixel signals at high speed.

    Foxconn to enter digital camera market http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18988/foxconn-to-enter-digital-camera-market Mon, 12 Feb 2018 07:21:41 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 18988@/talks/discussions

Major iPhone assembler Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn Technology Group, said on Sunday that it plans to team up with premium camera maker RED Digital Cinema to make professional-quality and affordable film cameras for the general public, while expanding into the manufacture of semiconductors for displays and cameras.

Those moves come as the Taiwanese company is building facilities to make large-scale display panels in the U.S. and China. It is seeking new revenue sources to compensate for weakening smartphone demand. It wants to reduce its business dependence on Apple, which accounts for more than 50% of its sales. Foxconn assembles iPhone mobile phones and MacBook computers among other products for Apple, but profit margins are razor thin. The manufacture of more electronics equipment and components could improve the company's earnings.

"We will make cameras that will shoot professional-quality films in 8K resolution but at only a third of current prices and a third of current camera sizes," Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou told reporters in Taipei following the company's annual employee party before the Chinese New Year. 8K ultra-high definition resolution has become the benchmark standard for digital television and cinematography.

Gou said he is in talks with RED Digital Cinema, whose cameras are used in the filming of such hit films and TV shows as Transformers and Netflix's House of Cards, to form a joint venture or partnership to produce affordable cameras. A RED's 8K camera now sells for around $30,000.

Foxconn's move is part of an effort to build a corporate ecosystem related to displays and videos. Gou said his company is basing its strategy on the display manufacturing facilities it already operates and its 2016 acquisition of Sharp's semiconductor business, which will be expanded this year.

"Not only displays, Sharp controls important chip technologies for various image sensors that go into digital cameras and televisions. We will definitely make good use of them and make more of them," said Gou. "And we will make these [semiconductors] much more cheaply. That's our important goal and project for this year."

    Sony New Management Structure http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18919/sony-new-management-structure Fri, 02 Feb 2018 03:48:15 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 18919@/talks/discussions

Kenichiro Yoshida named as President and CEO effective April 1, 2018; Kazuo Hirai to become Chairman

Tokyo, February 2, 2018 — Sony Corporation (“Sony”) today announced that Kenichiro Yoshida, currently Director, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, Executive Deputy President and Chief Financial Officer, has been appointed as Director, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, President and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2018. Kazuo Hirai, currently Director, Representative Corporate Executive Officer, President and Chief Executive Officer, will become Director, Chairman, also effective April 1, 2018.

The above management transition was proposed by Mr. Hirai to the Sony Nominating Committee, and following deliberation by the Nominating Committee, was approved by the Sony Board of Directors at a Board meeting held earlier today.

Following this realignment, Sony will embark on its next mid-range corporate plan starting April 1 2018, under a new management structure led by Mr. Yoshida.

    Comment from Kazuo Hirai
“Ever since my appointment as President and CEO in April 2012, I have stated that my mission is to ensure Sony continues to be a company that provides customers with kando – to move them emotionally – and inspires and fulfills their curiosity. To this end, I have dedicated myself to transforming the company and enhancing its profitability, and am very proud that now, in the third and final year of our current mid-range corporate plan, we are expecting to exceed our financial targets. And it excites me to hear more and more people enthuse that Sony is back again. As the company approaches a crucial juncture, when we will embark on a new mid-range plan, I consider this to be the ideal time to pass the baton of leadership to new management, for the future of Sony and also for myself to embark on a new chapter in my life. My successor, Kenichiro Yoshida, has supported me closely since returning to Sony in December 2013 , contributing extensively beyond his remit as CFO and acting as valuable confidant and business partner, as we took on the challenge of transforming Sony together. Mr. Yoshida combines a deeply strategic mindset with a relentless determination to achieve defined targets, and the ability to take a global viewpoint. I believe he possesses the breadth of experience and perspective, as well as the unwavering leadership qualities required to manage Sony’s diverse array of businesses, and as such is the ideal person to drive the company forward into the future. As Chairman, I will of course offer my full support to Mr. Yoshida and the new management team, and do all I can to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure their future success.”

    Comment from Kenichiro Yoshida
“I am very grateful to Kazuo Hirai and the Sony Board for their trust and confidence in appointing me as Sony President and CEO, and at the same time feel a great sense of responsibility in taking on this vitally important role. Together with the outstanding talent we have across the Sony Group, I will aim to build on the business foundations established by Mr. Hirai, and execute further reform measures that enhance our competitiveness as a global enterprise, and enable us to realize long-term profit growth. My first priority will be to finalize our next mid-range corporate plan starting in April, together with our immediate business plan for the fiscal year 2018, and then move ahead swiftly with implementation. This is a hugely exciting time at Sony as we look to our future, and together with my management team I intend to determine the best path for us to move forward, and devote my full effort to creating a better Sony that captures the imagination of our many stakeholders around the world.”

Comment from Osamu Nagayama, Chairman of the Board and Chair of the Nominating Committee
“The Board is grateful to Kazuo Hirai for his outstanding contribution over the past six years, taking leadership of the company amidst an extremely challenging business environment in 2012, and making great progress in revitalizing Sony’s business. Given these achievements, we were initially surprised by his proposal to step down from the role of President and CEO, but over time and following extensive further discussions we ultimately reached a decision to respect his wishes. The Nominating Committee had been regularly discussing potential management succession plans, and after receiving the proposal from Mr. Hirai, we engaged in renewed discussion, leading to the conclusion that Mr. Yoshida would be the ideal candidate to succeed Mr. Hirai as Sony President and CEO, and lead Sony into the future. The Board also unanimously supported this proposal. Together with Mr. Hirai, the Board will offer their full support to Mr. Yoshida and his new management team, while also closely observing their progress from a shareholder perspective.”

Xiaomi violated over 200 patents http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18917/xiaomi-violated-over-200-patents Thu, 01 Feb 2018 14:43:14 +0000 tonalt 18917@/talks/discussions The Chinese media was agog recently with news that Coolpad had sued Xiaomi before a Beijing court for patent infringement. Xiaomi had come out after that to deny the allegation and stated that it is yet to receive the court papers. The latest gist coming out of that story comes from Coolpad’s CEO Jiang Chao who revealed that Xiaomi’s infringement of its patents spans more than 200 patents. The CEO, however, stated that they decided to sue Xiaomi for just six out of the 200.

Jiang Chao hinted that the purpose of selecting just 6 out of the 200 patents that Xiaomi and others infringed pon was to enhance China’s awareness and protection of intellectual property rights. He particularly noted that Coolpad does not intend to take advantage of Xiaomi’s rising status. Jiang also revealed that Coolpad has more than 10,000 patents authorized only for use by Qualcomm, and are not licensed for use by third parties. He noted that hundreds of patents related to dual standby are not even available to Qualcomm.

Xiaomi in its earlier response disclosed that it holds several patent agreements with Microsoft, Nokia, and other patent holders. In addition to that, the company hinted that it is also increasing its Research & Development effort with investments in that regard. Xiaomi recently opened a new R&D center in Shenzhen, Mainland China. But if Coolpad claims to have the patent in China covering dual standby, then Xiaomi must have dabbled into its dragnet even if the patent it used was from Nokia or Microsoft since Coolpad is a Chinese holder of the same patent.

Panasonic Lumix UK division found new way for money waste! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18794/panasonic-lumix-uk-division-found-new-way-for-money-waste Tue, 16 Jan 2018 15:51:15 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 18794@/talks/discussions

Join Lumix ambassadors at some of Britain’s most spectacular locations to highlight the advanced capabilities of the G9 and the GH5

Panasonic Lumix is proud to announce a brand new 12 month partnership with the National Trust.

Newly appointed National Trust Lumix ambassadors will go behind the scenes at special places looked after by the conservation charity to capture unique images and videos.

The six ambassadors, who work for the National Trust and have a particular flair for either photography or video, have been chosen as part of this special new partnership. Each will be using either a Lumix GH5 or G9 and sharing their stunning results - along with their top photography hints and tips - across Lumix UK’s and National Trust’s social media channels.

Rob Coleman works as the Education Officer for the Trust at Sheringham Park in Norfolk which encompasses coast, woods and parkland. Much of Rob’s work is about engaging people with the fantastic wildlife that is found at Sheringham. He says, “I really enjoy photographing insects - macro photography which enables you to see tiny creatures in close up , gives you a completely different perspective on the natural world and everyday animals like spiders and woodlice can look amazing in close-up!”

National Trust Ranger Chris Johnson works at Allen Banks and Staward Gorge in Northumberland, and finds that his Lumix is the perfect tool for highlighting the important conservation work undertaken at the site. “The most important thing for me about camera is size. I need to carry all my kit for work so it’s important not to add more weight than necessary. I also don’t have the luxury of being able to dedicate lots of time to filming so I need to be able to pick it up and get shooting.”

Harriet Davies works as a Ranger on the Roseland in South Cornwall and describes her favourite things to photograph as “wildlife and the changing coastal landscapes where I work.” You can look out for other ambassadors across the country, including Sherringham Park in Norfolk, Croome in Worcester, Allen Banks and Staward George in Northumberland, Trelissick and Rosalind in Cornwall and Saddlescombe Farm and Devils Dyke in West Sussex.

The public will also be able to get involved, borrowing cameras, lenses and accessories as part of the National Trust Roadshow which will tour a number of properties this spring. During the roadshow visitors can enjoy all the benefits of using a Lumix G system, as well as take part in photo walks and special events.

Barney Sykes, Head of Imaging at Panasonic UK said “Partnering with the National Trust is the perfect way to demonstrate the superb nature and wildlife capabilities of our latest models, particularly the super high-speed G9 which can capture full-resolution images at 20 frames per second, and the GH5 which can record 4K video at 60fps. We’re delighted to have been able to partner with the National Trust once again, and continue our roadshows which have been hugely popular over the last few years”.

Daniel Dodd, National Trust Content and Partnerships Director, said: “We hope the ambassadors can give the public a fascinating insight into an often unseen world. From tiny creatures that scurry away when people go near, to meticulous conservation work which carefully takes place behind closed doors, this project will shed light on what happens at National Trust places.”

Further details about the partnership will be revealed over the next year.

    Insta360 Eight-Lens VR Camera and also 6DOF Light Field Camera http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18682/insta360-eight-lens-vr-camera-and-also-6dof-light-field-camera Tue, 09 Jan 2018 07:34:29 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 18682@/talks/discussions image

Insta360 today gave CES visitors a first look at its next wave of groundbreaking cameras, unveiling two new technologies that will let VR filmmakers immerse their audiences in experiences both more true-to-life and more interactive than ever before.

One of the new devices, an eight-lens professional VR camera, will occupy an all-new category for the leading 360° camera maker.

Capable of shooting fully spherical, stereoscopic (3D) video at upwards of 10 K resolution, this camera will be priced at roughly $12,000 USD and serve the needs of exacting VR creators at the top of their field. 4/3” image sensors will give the camera a high dynamic range and produce brilliant, noise-free shots even in low-light environments.

Specific specs, pricing and release date info will be announced at a later date.

Prototype Unveiled for 6DOF Light Field Camera

Insta360 also unveiled a new prototype for a light field camera. Leveraging 128 cameras laid out in a rectangular grid array, the camera can be used to create 180° video with 6 degrees of freedom (6DOF), meaning viewers can “move” throughout a piece of content along six directions (up, down, left, right, backward, forward).

Effectively, this means a viewer can freely change their perspective to view the same scene from any angle they choose, exactly as we do in real life. For example, a viewer might start by looking at a person’s face from a straight-on perspective. Then, by simply tilting their neck, they would shift to a three-quarter view of the face in front of them, with the curve of the nose and cheeks taking fuller shape in real time.

The 128-camera array achieves this effect by capturing a detailed representation of both the intensity and direction of light at every point within a scene. Insta360’s prototype allows freedom of movement within a range of roughly 1.5 feet (0.5 meters) in all six directions.

While the current prototype is used to record 180-degree video, the technology that Insta360 has developed can be applied to 360° capture as well. Ultimately, this technology will allow creators to record extraordinarily realistic scenes that viewers can explore at will, achieving all-new levels of immersion.

Info on specific products incorporating Insta360’s light field technology will be shared at a later date.
