Interview with Masaomi Tomizawa from Olympus http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/23051/interview-with-masaomi-tomizawa-from-olympus Mon, 11 Nov 2019 07:37:10 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 23051@/talks/discussions image

This interview was conducted at the OM-D E-M1X touch and try event in Tokyo.

The image processing engine is an IC chip that handles all processing operations- including color conversion, noise reduction and autofocusing. The engine was not developed for a single model; instead, a single engine was designed for all cameras in the current generation. Because of the long development period, a new engine is basically required to provide at least twice the performance of its predecessor. To make this possible, we use the latest IC chip for a new engine.

However, it is not enough to create a high-performance image processing engine. What is truly important when developing an engine is the power to anticipate what will come next. It is essential to be able to conceive and visualize the camera of the future by observing current trends and then developing the technology needed to make that camera a reality.

While the algorithm development team at Olympus indicates what needs to be implemented into the next model, the engine development team looks yet one step beyond that and works to provide the engine with flexibility. This extra margin determines the destiny of the camera systems for a generation. For example, the E-M1X, which was released in January of 2019, employs two TruePic VIII image processing engines, each of which is identical to the engine incorporated in the E-M1 Mark II. We were able to incorporate two engines into the new model because we had previously embedded in each engine a mechanism to facilitate synchronization.

With two engines, an exciting new array of capabilities have been unleashed such as Handheld High Res Shot. Technically, the new Handheld High Res Shot’s framework is completely different from the previous Tripod High Res Shot. Nevertheless, this does not mean that the TruePic VIII actually incorporates the functionality for the Handheld High Res Shot function. All we did was to predict the kind of processing that would be required by analyzing trends and incorporating the parts required in advance. We later succeeded in implementing the Handheld High Res Shot with the E-M1X by combining those parts.

We are confident in our ability to anticipate the future. As the leader in mirrorless cameras, we were the first to launch development of a dedicated engine, the first to get feedback from our customers, and the first to translate that feedback into hardware.

One of our other strong points is that we send our engine developers out in the field with professional photographers. This gives our engineers a chance to observe professionals in action, to see how they use their equipment, what they need, what they like, and what will help them to achieve their shooting objectives. This data forms the basis for conceptualizing the next-gen engine, which will appear on the scene in a few years.

Realtek 8K Video Decoder and Processor for mass market 8K TVs http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22153/realtek-8k-video-decoder-and-processor-for-mass-market-8k-tvs Fri, 07 Jun 2019 12:30:09 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 22153@/talks/discussions

Realtek Semiconductor Corp. (Taiwan Stock Exchange: 2379.TW), one of the world’s leading network and multimedia IC providers, announced today that the Realtek RTD2893 won the Best Choice of the Year award at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019.

image

The Realtek RTD2893 can upgrade a 4K TV platform to a fully functional 8K TV. Support for 8K AV1/HEVC/VP9 video decoding, HDMI 2.1 8K input and output, secure video bit stream transmission over USB/PCIe, and 8K video processing including all HDR formats allows the RTD2893 to dramatically reduce 8K TV development time for all TV brands. The RTD2893 presents a very cost competitive 8K TV solution with all DDR memory inside.

The 8K TV or set top box penetration rate will depend on the maturity of the 8K solution. Using only the RTD2893 IC, an existing 4K TV or set top box platform can be easily upgraded to a stable, high performance, 8K platform. This simple upgrade can reduce customer’s development resource costs and significantly speed up time-to-market.

“We are honored to receive the Best Choice of the Year award at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2019”, said Realtek’s Vice President and Spokesman, Yee-Wei Huang. “Our RTD2893 allows a 4K TV or STB to be easily upgraded to a fully functional 8K device. We expect this breakthrough will lead to faster expansion of the 8K market and allow viewers to enjoy the richness of 8K content at a lower hardware cost point”.

Mergers: Google saving Fitbit http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22918/mergers-google-saving-fitbit Fri, 01 Nov 2019 17:24:55 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 22918@/talks/discussions

Today, we’re announcing that Google has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Fitbit, a leading wearables brand.

We believe technology is at its best when it can fade into the background, assisting you throughout your day whenever you need it. Wearable devices, like smartwatches and fitness trackers, do just that—you can easily see where your next meeting is with just a glance of an eye or monitor your daily activity right from your wrist.

Fitbit to be acquired by Google in an all-cash deal worth around $2.1 billion.

Alphabet now wants to save Fitbit as situation is really bad, without major support, even with total statistics falsification, they can't stand against major Chinese brands and their latest offerings.

GlobalFoundries (GF) today announced that it filed lawsuits against Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in the U.S. and Germany over the alleged infringement of 16 patents. The company said that it's looking to halt the import of processors made with the technologies and is seeking "significant damages from TSMC based on TSMC’s unlawful use of GF’s proprietary technology in its tens of billions of dollars of sales." Impacted companies include Nvidia and Apple.

It is clearly AMD behind the court things (as GF already dropped out of the race and will be all sold soon), as they want to further reduce profits of TSMC and increase their own.
Now on each Ryzen 3 chip this distribution is around 85%/15% and AMD investors want to make it closer to 95%/5%.
Another point of negotiation is exchange of lawsuit drop to the full blockage of Huawei, as TSMC makes 90% of company main chips, including network ones.

Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers database leaked http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22862/adobe-creative-cloud-subscribers-database-leaked Sat, 26 Oct 2019 12:59:29 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 22862@/talks/discussions

The database containing the sensitive user info, discovered by security researcher Bob Diachenko and Comparitech, was accessible to anyone through a web browser.

The exposed user data for the nearly 7.5 million accounts included email addresses, the Adobe products they subscribed to, account creation date, subscription and payment status, local timezone, member ID, time of last login, and whether they were an Adobe employee.

Diachenko notified Adobe of the exposed data on October 19, 2019 and within the day Adobe had secured the database. It’s unknown how long the database was vulnerable and whether or not anyone gained access to it, but Diachenko believes it was ‘exposed for about a week.’

Bad behavior by security expert, as such database being widely available to anyone could significantly help the industry to become more healthy - read, make Adobe customers think where it all going and choose alternatives.

We're sad to report that Imaging Resource, one of our most longstanding (and very friendly) competitors is set to close at the end of 2019, after more than 20 years. In a lengthy message to friends in the industry, founder Dave Etchells confirmed that while the site will remain available through at least spring next year, content production will most likely cease by the end of this year.

Well, it is quite bad surprise and for me it looks more like minute emotions.

Yes, industry is falling. But still, I-R is quite reliable and superb small thing.

The news became official earlier today when founder Dave Etchells sent an email to some of his friends and colleagues in the industry.

It is little not nice, as it will look like he does care more about tight internal press circles more than about site audience now.

LG Display has carried out a reshuffle, reducing the number of its executives and business units by about 25 percent, in its ongoing efforts to improve deteriorating performance, the company said Friday.

The display maker said the latest reshuffle is aimed at raising business efficiency to better respond to the rapidly changing market environment and accelerate its shift to organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) from the failing liquid crystal display (LCD) business.

Main threat is the Chinese panel manufacturers and simple fact that both LG and Samsung had been literally thrown out of smartphones and monitors market in China. Seems like TV are following fast.

The main “PENTAX meeting” will be held in a buffet style. The company is preparing for events such as the sale of 100th anniversary merchandise, with a focus on "hot social gatherings between fans and our employees".

Strong industry rumors are that Ricoh is looking on the ways to silently kill Pentax brand, as well as all DSLRs lineup.

On the falling market it is no longer viable to support development teams as they are lagging years behind competition anyway.

Ricoh plan to stay in the profitable new markets of instant cameras and VR/360 cameras.

Samsung ISOCELL Slim GH1 offers 43.7 megapixels in an extremely compact package, ideal for slim full-display smartphones

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today introduced the industry’s first 0.7-micrometer (μm)-pixel image sensor, the 43.7-megapixel (Mp) Samsung ISOCELL Slim GH1. Thanks to advanced ISOELL Plus technology, the new ultra-high-resolution GH1 image sensor embraces 43.7-million 0.7μm-sized pixels in a super-small package, providing the optimum solution for slim full-display devices.

“Samsung has been stepping up in pixel technology innovation from the industry’s first 1.0μm-pixel image sensor, to most recently, 0.8μm ultra-high-resolution sensors at 64Mp and 108Mp,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of the sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to deliver yet another breakthrough with the industry’s first 0.7μm pixel image sensor, the ISOCELL Slim GH1 that will enable sleeker and more streamlined designs as well as excellent imaging experiences in tomorrow’s smartphones.”

The ISOCELL Slim GH1 is the industry’s first mobile image sensor to adopt the smallest pixel size in the industry at 0.7μm. By utilizing ISOCELL Plus, Samsung’s latest pixel isolation technology that minimizes color cross-talk and optical loss, the tiny 0.7μm pixels are able to absorb sufficient light information to produce bright and vivid photographs. In low-light environments, the GH1 makes use of pixel-merging Tetracell technology that enables higher light sensitivity equivalent to that of a 1.4μm-pixel image sensor.

For video recording at 4K (3,840×2,160) resolutions, the ISOCELL Slim GH1, with a high resolution of 7,968×5,480, is able to take 4K videos with minimum loss in field of view (FoV), while most high-resolution image sensors crop or scale down full image resolutions that result in a reduced FoV. Using Tetracell technology, the GH1 is converted down to 3,984×2,740, a resolution that snugly covers the 4K (3,840×2,160) resolution, allowing users to capture more detailed backgrounds when recording high-resolution videos or selfies at 60T frames per second (fps).

For sharper photographs and video, the GH1 supports a gyro-based electronic image stabilization (EIS) and a high-performing phase detection auto-focus technology, Super PD, allowing fast and accurate autofocus. In addition, the real-time high dynamic range (HDR) feature delivers more balanced exposure and richer color even in mixed-light environments.

The Samsung ISOCELL Slim GH1 is expected to be in mass production by the end of this year.
