My local shop, who are repairing this, told me that this second hard drive is not a good thing to have in a MBP, because this second hard drive never goes into sleep mode and would damage the computer in long terms... Anybody heard about this, do you have experiences about this?

Laptop for video editing http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6561/laptop-for-video-editing Sun, 31 Mar 2013 17:43:44 +0000 goep 6561@/talks/discussions Hi all, New on the forum after long reads and proud new owner of a 2nd-hand gh2 after I saw the mind-boggling quality this cam can produce after the tickling you great people have provided with the patches/settings and the experience you so kindly share. Being the lackluster owner of a powerbook (yes the g4) and a macmini, I knew I would have to upgrade computerwise if I ever wished to do something with the footage that I would shoot. Impatient as I am, I bought the camera anyway and now I am looking at two smoking cpu's...(smoking as in not in a good way). And on a (no)budget as I am, I was wondering what you good people would advice me to look at. My situation is such that I really can only go for a laptop. I want the thing to be mobile and I have got no room for a computercorner. So a laptop it must be. Off course I have searched the net and everyone seems to agree that the biggest Apple is the only way to go. I have been an 'apple-man' for the past 13 years, but the things are expensive man! So I am willing to look pc-side as well. The thing is, I really don't know what the minimum requirement is for editing the high bit rates that these wonderful settings produce. Can I get by with an older macpro? What processor/gpu is minimally required? I know fcp7, but am willing to learn avid/premiere. I would very much appreciate your feedback.

Finally Launched: the Adapteva so called "supercomputer" http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4763/finally-launched-the-adapteva-so-called-supercomputer Sat, 29 Sep 2012 20:18:20 +0000 goanna 4763@/talks/discussions Update: See latest post or

http://www.zdnet.com/parallella-the-99-linux-supercomputer-7000014036/

Semiconductor start-up Adapteva has launched a Kickstarter project with the aim of creating a 'supercomputer for everyone,' in the form of the Raspberry Pi-inspired Parallella board.

Like the Raspberry Pi, which has been staggeringly successful since it launched despite a few hiccoughs along the way, the Parallella board packs an ARM processor onto a credit-card sized form-factor with a wodge of memory, general-purpose input-output capabilities, and various ports. Where the Parallella differs, however, is in its performance potential, with Adapteva claiming to achieve around 50GHz of CPU-equivalent general-purpose computing performance from its Epiphany co-processor.

...costing $99 for the 16-core version and a projected $199 for the 64-core version,...

i currently own a macbook pro 15" 2011 edition with: 2.2ghz i7 , 4gb 1333 ddr3 ram , AMD radeon 6750m 512mb graphics card, 500GB TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF sata hard drive.

how can i speed this system up? i am looking at getting 16gb of ram (which this series of macbook pro accepts) and a solid state hard drive of some sort with fast read write speeds i presume?

is there anything i can do on the graphics card front to speed up programs like premier , speed grade, after effects and davinci resolve lite? (i know i cant change mine as its solderd in but can i plug an external one into my system?

also my max resolution on this screen is 1440x900 - not large enough for davinci can someone tell me if there is a way to get an external moniter running from my macbook with high enough resolution to work on davinci? how do i do this?

im running lion 10.7.5 by the way.

ps sorry vitally i know this thread is a bit of a mess , but i simply do not understand computers enough to be able to find the information i need.

thanks in advance everyone

Thu, 21 Mar 2013 09:03:14 +0000 windsurf 6459@/talks/discussions Hi all... after some months of thinking...i've buy yesterday the Panasonic GH3 primarely to make video. I've taken some movie shot sample in two of the different available format (AVCHD and MOV). I copied the files into my NetworkMedia Player (PopCornHour C200) and i tried to play. The result of the more high bitrates files (72Mbs and 50Mbs) was not so good.. the image are sometime jerky, not smooth.

I tried too into my Laptop... I have a Lenovo T410i O.S : W7 64bit Professional CPU : i5 RAM : 8 Gb GPU : NVIDIA 3100M HDD : OCZ Vertex II 128 GB

but the results are not so good too...

So my question is.. Is there anybody that has tried something similar...?and what are the results..?

I 'm thinking to update my Network Media Player or my Laptop...but i'd like to be sure that i'll have no more problems... May be with the new PopCornHour A400 (with a Sigma SMP8911 dual-core CPU) this files play smoothly.. but i do not like to spend money and having the same problems...

Thank you for sharing your experience here..

Have a good days.

Turning GeForce GTX 690 into Quadro K5000 and Tesla K10, must work for other cards http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6446/turning-geforce-gtx-690-into-quadro-k5000-and-tesla-k10-must-work-for-other-cards Wed, 20 Mar 2013 06:16:29 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6446@/talks/discussions

When you buy GeForce GTX 690, the most expensive dual-gpu graphics NVIDIA has in their offer, you expect the best performance and every feature enabled. Well this is actually true, however it does not support the same technology as it’s professional counterpart Quadro K5000.

If the GeForce could be modified into Quadro, you would save $1000. A member of the EEV Forums did just that, because his GeForce GTX 690 would support NVIDIA Surround (multi-monitor technology) in Windows, but it would not support Mosaic in Linux, which is exclusive technology for Quadro series. What is worth noting is the fact that NVIDIA Quadro K5000 is a single-gpu card, clocked lower than 690.

In order to understand how this modification works, we have to bring up few facts. In the past it was actually very easy to modify GeForce cards into Quadro (and opposite), by changing the hardware straps on the board. These straps control the PCI Device ID, which carries the information what card is connected to the slot. So if you knew the codes for each card, you could manipulate them to emulate specific model of the card. However NVIDIA changed the way to control the ID. To change it on the GTX 690 it requires some modification to the board itself. By changing the analogue values of certain components we can manipulate the ID. The modder gave us a whole list of values corresponding to specific codes:

  • 5K = 8
  • 10K = 9
  • 15K = A
  • 20K = B
  • 25K = C
  • 30K = D
  • 35K = E
  • 40K = F

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690 has an ID of 0×1188, while Quadro K5000 has 0x11BA and Tesla K10 0x118F. Long story short, it equates to 20K and 15K resistors to be enabled in order to change 690 into K5000, whereas it requires 5K and 40K resistors to transform it to Tesla K10. And that’s it.

Other users suggest that the same way can be applied to GeForce GTX 660Ti/670 to transform them into 680.

It seems like the general consensus on these things is "the more the better," especially based on the videoguys DIY builds. But I don't want some ridiculous thing I don't need. I'm a hobby shooter so this will be more for learning purposes. I'll do some light grading based on the colorghear tuts. I'm most concerned with getting the right machine for my purposes than cost. I've used this post by apefos as my starting point...

"Best bang for the buck editing system today is: GT640 gpu, Asus P8B75M-LE motherboard, 3570 intel processor (default cooler), 8gb ram (2x4gb) 1600mhz or 16gb (2x8gb) if you will load more software at same time, SSD 120gb for system, 7200 rpm hd for files and scratch disk, two 7200 rpm hd in windows software raid for video, bluray burner. Cineform Neoscene to transcode video to cineform codec (much better real time playback, fluid without stutter and better quality preview in full, half and quarter resolution)."

Do you guys think this will be enough for my needs? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Is software made for this type of thing to get it dialed in perfect, or is their any kind of recipe list of suggestions online, or should I just rely on what looks best to me? I don't want to spend a lot of time grading something to have it look completely different on other screens. I didn't really know what I would think about using a TV as a monitor to edit with, but I actually like it a lot because it gives me a way better idea of how the footage would somewhat appear on other TVs.

I wills start it out with a continuation from another thread/response to another user regarding my personal favorite fans Noiseblockers

@Kronstadt I personally bought the XL2's, but there were only two models 4 years back. My next fans will probably be the M12-P simply because if I need it it provides more airflow through higher RPM's. The thing to realize is though the M12-P is rated at slightly higher DB this will completely change when you use your MOBO software to control fan speed. My sabertooth actually lets me set profiles based on temps, ie if my cpu reaches X degrees my fan will go up to X speed... so except when you actually need it you can run an M12 at 30% speed which will be dead silent. 60-80% will likely be dead silent too. There is also a big brother to my fan called the XLP which is the same speed as the M12-P, the M12 has the advantage of a special dampening frame. But at about a 30% price increase... truthfully the dampening frame is probably not going to make much of a difference except maybe CPU mounting where thin metal fins can make some noise. But then fans these nice you won't need to by again anytime soon, so why not get the best ones they have is my personal view ;)

Here is a link to where I got mine, the fans are about half a page down. http://www.frozencpu.com/search.html?mv_profile=keyword_search&mv_session_id=2k7cc4sQ&searchspec=noiseblocker&go.x=0&go.y=0 I was pleasantly surprised to see NB now has 140mm fans! hmmmm... I have a spot for one of them :) Wow, I also just noticed some of their Multiframes are way down on price!

Making a Macbook Pro - pro http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4962/making-a-macbook-pro-pro Mon, 22 Oct 2012 17:45:12 +0000 Frame 4962@/talks/discussions I do not need 8 hrs of promised battery life. 1 hr is enough. I feel unconfortable with the fact that my 17" Macbook Pro consumes battery power with processor intensive tasks and only runs on half he speed when the battery is removed.

So much space wasted witha BIG battery. I already swapped the dvd drive for a hard drive, but why not replacing the battery by a smaller one and use the space for another 2 harddrives, 4 total, all in one laptop? I recently stumbledover the fact, that the 17" 2011 Macbook Pro has six Sata ports. Only two are used, for the internal hard disk and DVD-drive Also, there is one USB port unconnected. I do not know, wether there are any physical Sta/USB connections on the logic board to attach or solder cables to. But I can imagine, (with some mechanical skills on micro-chirurgical level) that the FW-800 port could be daisy chained: Cut the traces to the FW800 connector (If accessible) "rewire" to those extra harddrives (cannibalized from 2.5" FW-800 enclosures) connect back.

There are many technically experienced people in this forum, maybe you can answer me some questions:

Power: The Macbooks use Lithium-Polymer batteries. The harness of (I think) 9 cables going from the motherboard to the battery indicates, that the Macbook does the complete job of charging and balancing the individual Li-Po cells of the batteries. The Macbook has sensors for measuring the current of the batteries. Measurement of voltage is not mentioned. Does anyone know wether the capacity of Li-Po cells is important for the circuitry charging them? If not, I could replace the battry for a smaller one without doing any harm...?

Charlie Miller managed to hack the firmware for the batteries, up to the point where they could be destroyed.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2011/07/how-charlie-miller-discovered-the-apple-battery-hackhow-a-security-researcher-discovered-the-apple-battery-hack/

The alternative: Does anyone know, wether the Macbook can be tricked to run at full speed without the battery? I guess, a more powerful AC adaptor, stronger than 85 watt, would be needed as well. Does anyone know the voltage of the Macbooks DC Input?

About the Locic board: ARE the spared Sata ports accessible? Does anyone know? Anyone looked at the FW800 port wether it has accessible traces?

Thanks a lot, Frame
