Intel GPU design http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17017/intel-gpu-design Thu, 25 May 2017 13:08:05 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 17017@/talks/discussions Intel processor graphics GPUs have two main groups of hardware:

image

*Execution Units/EUs: General purpose execution units. These are used for graphics rendering, but they are also suited to a wide range of media processing tasks. * Media Fixed Function: In addition, specialized fixed function hardware accelerates video codec and frame processing algorithms for fundamentally higher performance at lower power than the EUs or CPUs.

The basic unit of the GPU architecture is the subslice. This contains EUs and memory components. They are assembled into slices.

image

Subslices are assembled into slices

image

Execution Units are general purpose compute engines ideal for video processing uses. They are often used by encode for parts of the algorithm not run in fixed function like rate control and mode decisions. The samplers are also highly important to media tasks. They are used by resize and motion estimation.

In addition to EU slices, there is an “unslice” with additional hardware engines individually schedulable for media tasks:

image

image

  1. VDBox (also known as MFX) for codec operations
  2. VEBox (also known as VQE) provides hardware acceleration for video enhancement/frame processing operations.

VDbox/MFX contains:

  • Bitstream decoder (BSD).
  • ENC (intra prediction, motion estimation)
  • PAK (quantization, entropy coding, pixel reconstruction, motion compensation)

VEbox/VQE contains:

  • Denoise
  • Advanced Deinterlace (ADI)
  • Local Adaptive Contrast Enhancement (LACE)
  • Camera processing features (skin tone enhancement, etc.)

Intel FP32 GPU performance is still very low

Choosing the GPU for my new rig http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13144/choosing-the-gpu-for-my-new-rig Tue, 09 Jun 2015 02:05:03 +0000 Riker 13144@/talks/discussions I'm trying to get the final piece for my puzzle, reading all across the web about what exact GPU would be the most fitting for Premiere CS6. I've read numerous replies, from "go with the latest, fastes nvidia gaming card" to "get the old 580 because it still rocks".

My shopping list so far is;

i7 4790K - Z97 Pro - 32 GB RAM - Intel 535 480GB (OS / apps / scratch) - WD Black 2TB (media)

I use this primarily and only for editing my own footage (AVCHD). I use only 2 brands of camera, not sure if I can name names, but one can deliver 100 Mbps 4K video in AVCHD, and 200 Mbps in 1080p, and the other one is the most popular action cam on the market. I use CS6 and if someone convinces me, I could consider switching to CC...so that should also be taken into consideration.

I would like to finalize my build by choosing the right card for this system, so if you can give me any advice, that would be awesome. I don't need any raid setups, for my intents and purposes I believe a straighforward build like this is enough, one day I might experiment with M2 but that's out of the option now.

Also, I do some mographs in AE but as far as I can tell, GPU acceleration in AE is for raytracing only, which is something I don't do so...I guess it doesn't matter. If the GPU can improve working in Resolve, that would be great.

Hope to get some good advices, and if you have any other suggestions on my build, feel free to add.

Thanks

Tangent Ripple - 3 balls for less than 400EUR http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15163/tangent-ripple-3-balls-for-less-than-400eur Thu, 02 Jun 2016 13:45:00 +0000 Psyco 15163@/talks/discussions Just got my Tangent Ripple yesterday and haven't found any topic about it, so here we go...

In a nutshell: Its 3 trackballs, 3 dials, 2 reset buttons per dial/ball, 2 extra buttons A and B, it costs arround 370EUR and connects via USB.

The housing is made of (cheap) plastic and so it makes some noise when moving the balls, but the trackballs and dials are quite nice. I think its "ok" for the price.

I'm using it with Davinci Resolve and the setup is quite easy (less than 5min): download the Tangent hub software, install it, connect the Ripple, start Resolve, select Tangent Elements Panel (the Ripple simulates the Element TK), have fun.

The balls/dials controll the left 3 colour wheels/bars of the Colour page (I have not figured out how to controll the right most wheel/bar). The left reset buttons reset the respective colour wheel, the right buttons reset the respective colour wheels and luminance. Extra button B toggles "bypass all grades" on/off and I have no idea what the A button does.

I have not used the panel for serious grading so far, but from some quick testing I can say:

  • The panel sits very stable on its four rubber feet..

  • Its nice to be able to controll 2 or 3 colour wheels at once - much better than one by one.

  • The trackballs are nice, heavy and feel good, but I have to adjust the sensetivity (if thats possible) as small changes are a bit imprecise.

  • Its much better than using the mouse for the colour wheels... MUCH BETTER! (Thats the reason why I bought the Ripple.)

  • I wish the B button would only bypass the current node, not all nodes. I have not found any way to reassign the A and B buttons to other functions (but maybe its possible).

  • The right trackball sometimes does not move equally smooth in all directions - it seems one of the small support balls under the trackball gets stuck. Maybe this is only with my panel? (If you have a Ripple, please let me know if its the same on yours.)

Some tipps:

  • Take the trackballs out of the housing if you want to pick up the panel and carry it arround! They are not enclosed by the housing and easily fall out (they are heavy!).

  • If the panel wobbles on a flat surface, relocate the USB cable - it doesn't like to stay in its groove.

As you can see in the pictures, I'm going to use the Ripple (3 trackballs) with a Midifighter Twister (16 programmable rotary encoders) and an Icon Istage (lots of buttons) for my colour grading setup. The Ripple does work out of the box. The Twister works really nice with Controllermate and I'm nearly finished with the program to control a lot of functions in Resolve with it. The Istage might be replaced soon, as the hardware is quite nice for the low price, but the software/firmware is total crap... really, its the worst I have ever seen. I will try a Korg Nanopad2 soon, hopefully this will work better.

I need a tablet to run Panasonic Image App. The tablet should have USB 3 ports to copy the SDXC card data to a 2TB ext. HDD.

I had originally decided on the Chuwi Hi8 for its 1920x1200 screen and USB Type-C connector. Turns out the Image App may not work on Android on Intel, and the Chuwi implementation of the Type C only gives USB 2.0 speeds.

Also, Android ARM tablets only have the USB 2.0 micro connector. Its really frustrating..

Can someone recommend an ARM Android tablet with USB 3.0 host functionality ?

EDIT :- Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 has USB 3.0 - but its a huge tablet.

Panasonic and Sony, please, implement a 4k 10bit 4:2:0 recording mode http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16471/panasonic-and-sony-please-implement-a-4k-10bit-420-recording-mode Sun, 19 Feb 2017 06:49:23 +0000 apefos 16471@/talks/discussions The GH5 footage 4k 10bit 4:2:2 is very processor intensive and needs a 8 core CPU computer to play smooth in timeline. Even a 6 core cpu computer can have some sttuter when play the files in editing timeline unless it is overclocked. The GPU cannot help because the CPU does the decoder.

So the idea is to implement a 4k 10bit 4:2:0 recording mode, because it would be less processor intensive and any quadcore computer would edit it with no sttuter when play in editing timeline. It would save lots of people with a quadcore and with a sixcore to avoid a computer upgrade. For lots of people it would be an impossible computer upgrade because a 8 core CPU + motherboard is very expensive.

A 4k 10bit 4:2:0 recording mode would be enough for a good VLOG and SLOG grading, because the 10bit would avoid banding. The 4:2:2 recording mode would be an option for people who needs chromakey and other compositing chroma intensive tasks.

The 4:2:0 video have 25% less pixels information compared to 4:2:2 video, only less color pixels, same luma resolution, and this would make the 4k 10bit footage less processor intensive to play smooth in editing timeline when using quadcore computers.

Bluray 4k is 10bit 4:2:0, and if 4:2:2 is needed, a render to 4:2:2 can be made without significant difference, the important thing is the 10bit.

So please Panasonic implement a 4k 10bit 4:2:0 recording mode in a firmware update for the GH5 and future cameras. This would be a simple firmware update.

Also Sony could implement this in future 4k cameras.

However, I absolutely must have a laptop to do my editing on the road while it is happening. I have a matter of hours to edit this footage and not days, weeks, or months.

Also I am a PC guy. I understand that some people use Macs. That just isn’t for me. I want a fast PC laptop that can handle editing the GH4 4K video for less than $2000.

I definitely need to upgrade my laptop before my GH4 gets here. However, I am not sure what specs will help me and what will just cost me more money and not really give me any benefit.

Obviously a 4K screen would be ideal to match the footage. However, is that really necessary? With a 15-19 inch screen is that extra resolution going to matter at all? How much are the 4K laptops going to be? Is 1920x1080 going to look about the same as 4K on this size screen? Do any of you have a 4K laptop already?

What Grpahics processor? I have always been an ATI person before. However, Nvidia makes great video cards as well. What is the minimum ATI and Nvidia card that will work for editing 4k footage? Is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M enough?

Processor. It is confusing about what processor are fast and what processors are just pretending to be fast. My understanding is that I7 doesn’t always mean what you think it means. So what processor should I be looking for? Is the i7-4700MQ the best processor to get right now?

Operating system. I really hate Windows 8. I have a laptop with it and I hate it. I really don’t want to get another one with Windows 8. Will Windows 7 hold me back in any way? I have a lot of astrophotography programs that I also run and those won’t work properly under Windows 8.

Ram. I know the more you have the better. However, will you see a difference between 16 Gigs and 32 Gigs? There is usually a significant price difference between those. Is 16GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM enough?

Hard Drive. I am using USB 3.0 external drives right now. I need a lot more than 250 or even 500 GB so solid state is not really an option for me. Is solid state that much faster than USB 3.0?

Here is one laptop I am looking at. It is an Alienware 17.3" Laptop - 16GB Memory with the components I listed above. Are there better options out there for less than $1850?

Nvidia Color settings and Vimeo http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16157/nvidia-color-settings-and-vimeo Sat, 10 Dec 2016 10:36:49 +0000 Scot 16157@/talks/discussions Hopefully this is new information I did not see any reference to the issue.
I for the first time was posting to Vimeo but was unhappy with the results it looked dull compared to playing it on my computer very much the opposite of youtube which has it's own issues. After trying to figure what I was doing wrong I stumbled upon the fact Nvidia cards on PCs have a setting to change dynamic range. You can set dynamic range from Full (0-255) or Limited (16-235). This setting has no effect in my editor or you tube but makes a huge difference in Vimeo. It seems the default is 16-235 but changing it to 0-255 it makes my videos look as intended. I did check watching thru my Roku on TV and it is fine. This leaves me confused as I'm not sure how to react to this. Is this strictly a Nvidia issue? Have I been living under a rock unaware?
It also made me realize why I did not like some peoples color settings in Vimeo it wasn't them it was me lol.

be great if i could stack them in some sort of rack mount, at moment they are scattered across my desk top in a bit of a mess!

Whats currently the smallest/best external recorder for GH4 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16035/whats-currently-the-smallestbest-external-recorder-for-gh4 Sat, 12 Nov 2016 05:51:46 +0000 tubefingers 16035@/talks/discussions I have a Samurai Blade which is great with my AF101/161 but would need a SDI>HDMI convertor, which costs almost as much as a cheap recorder. So I need a small recorder to capture 1080p 10 bit 422 from the GH4, any suggestions with/without monitor are appreciated. Is it true 10 bit 422 from the GH4 ? I only ask because the 10 bit output from the AF101 was bollocks - 8 bit with dithering. *The Ninja Star is looking like the best option right now at £200 plus cost of Cfast cards
