A new company called Metalenz, which emerged from stealth mode, is looking to disrupt smartphone cameras with a single, flat lens system that utilizes a technology called optical metasurfaces. A camera built around this new lens tech can produce an image of the same if not better quality as traditional lenses, collect more light for brighter photos, and can even enable new forms of sensing in phones, all while taking up less space.

Instead of using plastic and glass lens elements stacked over an image sensor, Metalenz's design uses a single lens built on a glass wafer that is between 1x1 to 3x3 millimeter in size. Look very closely under a microscope and you'll see nanostructures measuring one-thousandth the width of a human hair. Those nanostructures bend light rays in a way that corrects for many of the shortcomings of single-lens camera systems.

The core technology was formed through a decade of research when cofounder and CEO Robert Devlin was working on his PhD at Harvard University with acclaimed physicist and Metalenz cofounder Federico Capasso. The company was spun out of the research group in 2017.

Light passes through these patterned nanostructures, which look like millions of circles with differing diameters at the microscopic level. “Much in the way that a curved lens speeds up and slows down light to bend it, each one of these allows us to do the same thing, so we can bend and shape light just by changing the diameters of these circles,” Devlin says.

The resulting image quality is just as sharp as what you'd get from a multilens system, and the nanostructures do the job of reducing or eliminating many of the image-degrading aberrations common to traditional cameras. And the design doesn't just conserve space. Devlin says a Metalenz camera can deliver more light back to the image sensor, allowing for brighter and sharper images than what you'd get with traditional lens elements.

Bad design: Online meetings and retrograde managers http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/25170/bad-design-online-meetings-and-retrograde-managers Tue, 02 Feb 2021 09:35:34 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 25170@/talks/discussions COVID showed that situation with management is really bad, as most of management do not understand how to use asynchronous tools.

During remote work they constantly want to use phone, Skype or Zoom video meetings and alike. And it is horrible waste of everyone time.

Not only this - but they also induce very bad habits into people, as they stop working without this constant kicking and pointless yelling.

And I am not sure if this generation of managers will get how to work during new times, most probably we'll see big wipe-out in next 2-3 years.

Mordor: Capitalists have no homeland http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/25169/mordor-capitalists-have-no-homeland Tue, 02 Feb 2021 09:29:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 25169@/talks/discussions

According to the current data of the Federal Customs Service of Mordor, for 11 months of 2020, wheat exports from Mordor amounted to 33.7 million tons. The results of other countries are much more modest: for example, Canadian exports for 11 months amounted to 24.4 million tons, the USA (traditionally the main competitor) - 24.2 million tons, France - about 18.5 million tons, Ukraine - 17.6 million tons.

Actually grain reserves are very low now and inflation on flour, pasta and bread set new records in years. Most of the money large exporters gained never returned to country.

Panasonic going out of solar panels business http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/25166/panasonic-going-out-of-solar-panels-business Mon, 01 Feb 2021 04:43:09 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 25166@/talks/discussions

As noted by the Nikkei Asian Review, in 2009 Panasonic was still hatching plans to become one of the three world leaders in the production of solar panels, for which in 2011 it turned the core business of Sanyo Electric into its own division. Since 2012, solar panel prices dropped by about 30%, largely driven by Chinese competitors, making Panasonic's business unprofitable. The company now intends to discontinue core activities at factories in Malaysia and Japan by March 2022. Cooperation with Tesla in this area was terminated last year.

Panasonic as company is shrinking despite some nice book records that mainly come from speculations and free government money injections.

Mordor companies also got notices and started planning within last month. New server and storage racks orders for local datacenters also set new records, most of them will come from China, some from EU suppliers.

The pace of development of technology, creation, processing and dissemination of information has significantly exceeded the capabilities of most people in the development and application of knowledge. The shift in accents in the perception of the surrounding world, especially on the Internet, from scientific, educational and cultural to entertainment and reference, has formed a new model of perception - the so-called clip thinking, a characteristic feature of which is the mass superficial perception of information. This form of assimilation of information simplifies the influence on the views and preferences of people, contributes to the formation of imposed patterns of behavior, which gives an advantage in achieving economic and political goals to those states and organizations that own information dissemination technologies"
