‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Editor Chimes in on His Editing Decisions

Another lesson in how not everything can be “fixed in the edit”. By all accounts, John Ottman is a good film editor. He’s been in the business for decades working his way up editing films like The Usual Suspects, Superman Returns, and the X-Men series. However, as we wrote about earlier this week, his most recent editing work on Bohemian Rhapsody has stood out as being not-quite reflective of what you’d expect to see in a mainstream blockbuster movie. In fact, it’s actually stood out as being - well - bad at times. Bad being subjective, so as Youtuber Thomas Flight points out in his video essay breakdown, unmotivated. And while criticism of Ottman’s work may seem harsh to some, it’s also worth noting that the only reason his work is being put under the spotlight is because… you know… it won an Academy Award for Best Film Editing at the Oscars!
