Despite the ARRI Alexa remaining the most popular camera option, this year's Oscar-nominated filmmakers also opted to shoot their films on film. Early this morning, the nominees for the 91st Academy Awards were announced. As predicted, Alfonso Cuarón's Roma received its share of nominations, 10 to be exact, including Best Picture and Best Director, as well as Bradley Cooper's A Star is Born receiving a not-too-shabby 8, with leads Lady Gaga and Cooper receiving noms for Best Actress and Best Actor. While each nominee offers plenty of insight into the art of filmmaking, this year's group is particularly interesting in terms of cinematography, especially compared to previous years. For example, three films, Cuarón's Roma, Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War, and Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Never Look Away, were all nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, with the first two being shot in black and white.
